Overview of Position
The VP, Tax directs and manages the Assurant companies’ tax functions in different locations. This individual is responsible for carrying out a broad range of tax work, including overseeing tax work for M&A and special projects, federal income tax planning and strategies, US GAAP taxes, business taxes and state and local taxes. This individual has sign-off responsibility subject to final approval by the SVP, Tax.
What will be my duties and responsibilities in this job?
Tax Accounting (25%)
Oversees the review of the quarterly and year end federal and state enterprise and business tax provisions with special emphasis on accounting for income tax rules and guidelines, such as ASC 740, ASC 450, SSAP 101, APB 28, FIN 48, etc.
The VP, Tax must keep current on accounting for income tax pronouncements and update relevant members of the tax team.
Works closely with the VP/Controllers in Accounting to discuss GAAP and non-GAAP reporting.
Reviews, analyzes, and presents consolidated GAAP and non-GAAP tax reporting for MCOM and external stakeholders.
Other duties, as assigned.
Reviews relevant controls for specific tax processes to ensure that all tax internal controls are in place and operating effectively (Sarbanes-Oxley compliance).
Tax Compliance (20%)
Oversees the review and the final sign off for the consolidated and state tax returns, including all necessary attachments and forms.
Oversees the review of estimated tax and extension calculations for the consolidated and state tax returns.
Oversees the review of proforma federal income tax returns, including all necessary attachments and forms.
Oversee partnership investments and tax basis tracking.
Oversees the company’s business taxes by directing the preparation and review of real and personal property tax filings, sales and use tax filings, excise tax filings and all other indirect tax filings. Reviews the accrual of indirect taxes to ensure the correct amounts are recorded in financial statements.
People Management (15%)
Provide leadership and manages the work activities of the tax staff.
Develop and coach staff, maintains a teamwork environment.
Work closely with senior tax management and manages relationships with outside consultants.
Tax Strategies and Consulting (40%)
Advise on various M&A deals from due diligence phase to closing and transition and coordinate with Accounting, Legal, and Integration teams.
Provide timely and accurate tax consulting, including timely response to inquiries, work closely with other departments (legal, compensation, etc.) on specific issues as they arise, and actively participate in various teams (international, M&A, etc.).
Support the SVP of Tax in advising on tax policy insights.
Oversees the implementation, documentation and monitoring of ongoing quality assurance for the indirect tax function in the Housing and Lifestyle Services group. Ensures compliance with regulatory agency guidelines and company policies and standards for corporate tax reporting.
Directs property tax, sales and use and excise tax audits. Evaluates proposed legislation and participates in development of audit strategies for the overall enterprise, identifies potential issues, manages tax audit activities and resolution of issues, appeals and/or litigation. Works with outside counsel in drafting responses to complex issues.
Work closely with our business partners to add value through tax savings in their businesses. Initiates and leads tax planning strategies and initiatives related global supply chain management of new and changes to existing products.
Identifies opportunities and strategies through awareness of internal business operations, developments in the field of taxation, external benchmarking and consideration for senior management's tolerance for risk.

What are the requirements needed for this position?
Education
Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
CPA Required.
Big 4 accounting firm experience required.
Requires proven proficiency in tax research and tax consulting.
Requires proven tax technical proficiency.
Requires the ability to remain proficient in current tax developments.
Knowledge and Skills
Requires knowledge of tax return and tax provision software.
Requires knowledge of tax research software (CCH, BNA, etc.)
Requires proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Required to maintain CPE (Continuing Professional Education) requirements.
Previous Experience
Requires at least 10 plus years of progressive tax experience in a medium to large company.
International tax experience a plus.
Requires experience building and maintaining numerous business relationships, including those with senior management.
Requires excellent oral, written and presentation skills to effectively communicate complex tax technical issues in understandable terms to all levels within the organization.
Requires strong time management skills to prioritize multiple projects and meet various tax deadlines.
Requires the ability to be flexible under pressure and multitask as needed to meet deadlines.
Requires strong leadership abilities to develop, lead, and direct professional staff in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable employment laws. This includes responsibilities such as interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding, motivating and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

What other skills/experience would be helpful to have?
Master’s in taxation or a related field preferred but not required.
Proven track record in leading global tax teams or international tax initiatives within multinational organizations.
Experience in structuring tax strategies across multiple jurisdictions and managing cross-border transactions.
Familiarity with tax issues specific to key industries such as finance, technology, manufacturing.
Experience working in dynamic, highly regulated industries with complex tax considerations.
Expertise in navigating regulations such as OECD guidelines, BEPS initiatives, and the impact of tax treaties.
Prior engagement with regulatory audits and negotiations with tax authorities globally.
Led successful implementations of automation tools, ERP integrations, or digital tax transformation projects.
Experience managing large-scale projects, such as M&A tax structuring or tax function redesigns.
Experience working with external advisors, auditors and tax authorities globally.
Preferred skills
Knowledge of global tax policy developments, emerging issues like digital taxation, and ESG-related tax implications
Familiarity with international tax planning strategies and regulatory changes
Strong understanding of financial reporting, tax accounting and integration with broader financial functions.
Ability to assess the financial implications of tax strategies on the company’s overall performance.
Deep understanding of tax implications for global supply chains, shared services models, and intercompany transactions.
Knowledge of foreign jurisdiction-specific tax systems and operational challenges.
Ability to communication complex tax concepts to non-tax professionals, including executives and cross-functional teams.
Pay Range:
$200,100.00 - $334,100.00Any posted pay range considers a wide range of compensation factors, including candidate background, experience and work location, while also allowing for salary growth within the position.
