A DAY IN THE LIFE:

The Senior Director, Engineering Operations will drive operational excellence by overseeing engineering execution and cost efficiency initiatives, engineering footprint strategy and vendor management, financial operations, compliance, and the tools enabling high-performing teams. The efficient operations of the engineering team are integral to the development of our Tandem Diabetes automated insulin delivery system, including our state-of-the-art insulin pumps t:slim and Mobi. They will balance immediate operational needs with data-driven strategic initiatives to drive long-term efficiency. As a leader, they will define a clear vision and roadmap for operational excellence, empowering engineering teams to focus on innovation and delivering impactful solutions.

Leadership & Management

  • Defines and drives the vision and strategy for the efficient operations of Tandem’s Software Engineering organization.
  • Leads as the delegate of the software engineering organization discussions and meetings with Senior Leadership and Executive Management.
  • Leads, mentors, and develops a high-performing engineering operations team.
  • In cooperation with software engineering leadership, drives engineering efficiency initiatives.
  • Builds strong relationships across the organization, including program management, product management, regulatory, clinical, quality, customer support, IT, procurement, legal, and drives adoption of best practices and operational improvements.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Engineering Footprint

  • Develops and maintains an engineering footprint strategy that supports departmental growth, scalability, and sustainability.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with software engineering service vendors in-country, nearshore and offshore.
  • Collaborates with procurement, IT, Legal, and Finance teams to ensure cost-effective vendor selection, contract negotiation, and the efficient management of contracts, statements of work, licenses, and any other activities related to engineering vendors.
  • Leads discussions with Human Resources, Talent Acquisition, and engineering leaders to drive an efficient hiring and onboarding process to meet the department's talent needs quickly and effectively.
  • Collaborates with IT, Procurement & Facilities to manage engineering workspace needs, equipment lifecycle, and hybrid/remote work infrastructure.
  • Drives the establishment of an offshore development center, including setting up operations from scratch or integrating through acquisition, ensuring alignment with business objectives, compliance with local regulations, and the successful onboarding of talent and resources.

Engineering Financial Operations

  • Serves as the key financial liaison between the software engineering team and corporate finance departments.
  • Develops and oversees the software engineering department’s annual budget, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities, that expenditures remain within limits, forecast expenses, and proactively identify opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Analyzes financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, delivering insights to inform strategic decisions.
  • Ensures accurate cost allocation & reporting to engineering projects, including labor and materials.

Engineering Efficiency

  • Develops and tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure operational efficiency and on-time delivery.
  • With a deep understanding of Software Engineering processes and infrastructure, creates and leads initiatives that streamline Software Engineering processes, improve team productivity, and reduce waste.
  • Fosters a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence across Software Engineering.
  • Establishes assigned ambassadors within the engineering organization for inter-department work agreements and alignment, serving as its chief-of-staff.
  • Manages and maintains technical writer(s) on staff who will provide the documentation needs for the software engineering organization, offloading responsibility from software engineers and leads.

Regulatory and Compliance

  • Works closely with the regulatory and quality assurance teams to support compliance and audit activities.
  • Ensures compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA (when applicable), and other legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Capable of translating high-level business needs into strategic and tactical plans.
  • Familiarity with data analytics and observability.

EXTRA AWESOME:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and applicable work experience.
  • 15 years of experience leading software engineering teams or operations teams in an engineering organization.
  • Experience in the medical device industry or other highly regulated industries is desirable.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The starting base pay range for this position is $235,000 - $300,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus, equity, and a robust benefits package.
