Job Description Summary

You’ll develop and attract new opportunities, further enhancing department product offerings. You will be accountable for underwriting guidelines, rates, forms and procedures, oftentimes unique to specific programs. You’ll influence relationships with program managers, agents, brokers and other customers. You will establish, develop and initiate all underwriting procedures as well as authority levels for program managers as well as company underwriting personnel. You’ll approve accounts which exceed underwriting staff’s authority, whether due to level of complexity, premium, class of business or coverage provided.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Responsible for the administration of the profitable operation of the Property programs. Accountable for the selection of new business opportunities and the initial development and review of the potential program/product. Develops, implements and monitors underwriting guidelines to enable profitable growth contributing to corporate net operating income. Work collaboratively across all divisions and functions within the company to achieve business plans and avoid brand conflict in the market. Establishes strategic business plans and makes recommendations to the Senior Vice President.
Build and sustain strong and productive customer relationships with all company production sources, including program managers, brokers, general agents and reinsurers.
Provides leadership to staff of leaders and underwriting associates. Recruits and develops key talent, leads change, communicates vision and goals, promotes workforce diversity, obtains results while generating a high level of associate engagement. Consistently demonstrates the executive competencies in support of the delivery of business objectives.
Applies business knowledge to leverage industry trends, product innovation, technical advancements and assesses federal and state regulatory impacts.
Prepares, administers and monitors premium and loss ratio goals, budgetary objectives and forecasts through the use of key financial performance indicators to measure business performance.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Reports to: Programs SVP.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: High school diploma or GED required. College degree preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: CPCU, RPLU, ASLI and other various specific technical seminars/instruction preferred.
Experience: 8-10 years managerial experience in Excess and Surplus lines or Specialty marketplace preferred. Knowledge of the E&S lines and specialty marketplace, general agency and program manager distribution system. Experience in placement and administration of reinsurance on a treaty basis as well as facultative placements. Experience in negotiations, influencing and leading, maintaining relationships, building effective teams, and driving results. Technical skills as well as interpersonal savvy, problem solving and strategic thinking.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to develop a plan and execute. Excellent verbal and written skills, strong negotiation skills with significant experience negotiating contracts and contract language with program managers and reinsurers. Skilled at building relationships and working with the wholesale distribution system.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
