General Summary:
The AVP, National Client Manager is the relationship steward for our largest, most sophisticated and most complex customer(s) with a minimum of 50,000 lives and/or $25M in premium per customer, and a block of at least 250,000 lives and $250M in premium. The AVP, NCM develops and implements a customized service strategy for their assigned case(s) and is accountable for retention and growth through strategic management of the holistic customer relationship. They are instrumental in improving case level profitability, driving increased participation, and achieving case and premium persistency targets. The AVP, NCM is responsible for facilitating special initiatives and customer level projects as needed and acting as the liaison between their clients and home office partners. The AVP, NCM must also maintain relationships with all levels of executives, including the CFO and Sr. HR Leaders, at the client as well as with the consultant / broker.Please note: This position can be based anywhere in the United States, however you will be required to work/be available for West Coast working hours.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as a dedicated consultant to a client leveraging their own expertise, deep knowledge of the client, and client’s industry to identify needs, and recommend Unum solutions.
- Anticipates client needs and proactively offers solutions and recommendations
- Key resource to coordinate all client level service items and project work which may be of very high complexity.
- Responsible for recognizing opportunities for new business and offering suggestions to clients and obtaining growth on the assigned block of business.
- Act as an extension of the employer’s administrative team and consults on administrative or enhanced service offerings to enrich the overall benefit package to employee/employer.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of strategic customized business plans for each client.
- Assures the complete and accurate implementation of new business and effectively delegates and sets expectations with customer business team.
- Holds partners (internal and external) accountable for driving day-to-day service delivery and, where needed, issue resolution.
- Mentors / Coaches Home Office National Client Managers to help grow talent within the organization.
- Focuses on driving comprehensive employee marketing of Unum benefits by developing enrollment/re-enrollment strategies and utilizing robust knowledge of internal and external capabilities and technology to maximize desired outcomes.
- Provide subject matter leadership and responsible for developing a deep understanding of broker/consultant/Third Party Firm/Benefits Administration/Exchange relationships in order to provide comprehensive solutions to their clients.
Job Specifications
- Bachelor’s degree required along with 10+ years employee benefits/insurance industry experience.
- 10+years of account management experience preferred.
- Strong consultative skills; able to think broadly when problem solving and making decisions.
- Superior relationship building/management, interpersonal and partnership skills; able to influence a range of constituents including all levels of management.
- Presale expertise that can assist in the influence and sale of Unum’s value proposition.
- Demonstrated success in critical thinking; able to analyze data and make effective recommendations.
- Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, persuasion, and conflict management skills.
- Strong organizational, planning, time management and delegation skills.
- Strong leadership skills. Ability and desire to coach and mentor others.
- Full understanding of underwriting and risk concepts.
- Full understanding of, and ability to correlate between the entire UNUM product portfolio to educate, and on a consultative basis cross sell products/services to brokers/clients.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$114,100.00-$215,700.00Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
