Job Description

We are seeking a VP of Software Engineering to play a pivotal role in our company's success. As a leader and manager of initiatives across several software engineering teams, you will be instrumental in transforming our teams towards creating reusable, cloud-native platforms and services. Your technical expertise and leadership will be key in modernizing our application UX experiences and reducing friction, cementing a solid engineering culture. Your role will not only mentor, guide, and grow the team's skills but also significantly contribute to our modern unified architecture.

How often are you at the center of a critical mission? As leader of the Platform Development engineering team, you will influence the direction of engineering culture, focused on product strategy and execution. You will work collaboratively with business and product leaders and oversee the management of a dynamic team that provides "best in class" technology solutions for NBCU. The VP will help drive technology standards, define roadmaps, and enforce modern architecture and patterns for software development. This includes the development, deployment, and operations of custom software solutions. You will also be working with tools/metrics that provide insight into the effectiveness, financial models (FinOps), and performance of these applications across the enterprise.

To be successful, the candidate will have an established track record at building web-scale applications and APIs, leverage solid business judgment, have excellent communication skills, and can execute and deliver in a quickly evolving environment. In addition, a successful candidate will be able to discover the accurate requirements underlying feature requests from both customers & internal stakeholders. The candidate will be expected to coach existing teams, retain top-tier talent, drive recruiting, and build junior engineering pipelines. Responsibilities:

  • Your leadership will be critical in fostering a culture of efficiency and innovation within our engineering teams as well as how we collaborate with our partners in across NBCU. You will be responsible for helping root our engineering culture that in cloud-native architectures, “actions over words,” being a “friction reducer.”
  • Lead engineering teams which will require extensive software engineering experience, especially in formulating strategy, roadmaps, and associated standards, policies, and frameworks.
  • Develop and support the continuous development of our platform wide application foundation and architecture strategy, aligning with our growing business needs.
  • Sharp eye for quality team contribution; ability to assess team members' work product at scale, as well as attitude.
  • Analyze customer needs and develop engineering team roadmap and backlog based on organization goals and customer impact.
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including product, engineering experience, cyber security, privacy, and business solutions teams, to ensure seamless delivery.
  • Drive technical excellence and innovation within the team, mentoring and developing engineers to build their skills and careers.
  • Manage budgets, contracts, and relationships with vendors and partners, ensuring projects are delivered within scope and budget.
  • Define and oversee the implementation of engineering policies and procedures that promote reliability, security, and compliance across all software products.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • 10+ years in related field, with at least 5 years in a senior executive leadership role focused on engineering cultural transformation and embodying a mindset of continuous learning.
  • Demonstrated experience building dynamic engineering teams, interested in continuous learning and the ability to craft an engineering culture.
  • Proven ability to maintain a roadmap for core service capabilities and interfaces that enable application and feature teams to deliver business value quickly.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cloud-native development, relevant metrics (that focus not only on velocity, but drive quality), modern CI/CD toolchains and partner with our Engineering Experience team.
  • Proven ability to establish truth within and across product, engineering, and the business to understand business challenges and requirements. Establish trust within and across teams by creating accountability and a positive work environment in partnership with other leaders across the organizations.

Desired Characteristics:

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Software engineering experience as a product manager, engineer, or manager previously leading teams of engineers
  • Able to communicate effectively in a diverse team of varying skillsets and proficiencies.  Able to lead and instruct or take direction when appropriate.  Effective in-person, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Can assess disparate data streams and distill them into meaningful and ultimately actionable recommendations.
  • Able to easily transition between high-level strategy and day-to-day implementation.
  • Results oriented, high energy, self-motivated
  • Experience working in large, multifaceted, and matrixed organizations.
  • Experience working with remote teammates across engineering.
  • Collaborative team player accustomed to working within and across groups.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with ability to manage time effectively.

  • Expertise working on a team with motivated cross-functional individuals focused on a common goal of delivering innovative solutions to meet aggressive business demands in an ever-changing environment and achieve on-time and on-budget project completion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to relate complex information to technical and non-technical audiences with transparency and accuracy, as well as an innate attention to detail. 
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate complex technical themes to C-level executives.
  • Ability to manage time and juggle multiple priorities to execute high-quality deliverables.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and highly cross-functional organization.
