VP of Public Policy and Government Relations

Overview
Location: Remote (Must be based in the US, in or close to one of the following areas: NYC, DMV, South Florida (Miami, Broward, Palm Beach Counties). Will also consider Austin Texas based candidates.)
Travel: up to 50% travel, mostly domestic, overnight travel
Manages Others: Yes, will oversee a team of internal Government Relations staff and oversee contract lobbying and public affairs firms.
Education: JD preferred, however will accept an advanced public administration, public policy or related field degree
Experience: Combination of 10+ years of experience in-house/industry lobbying or multi-client contract lobbying at the state/local level. Working in federal, state, or larger municipal government policy leadership and public administration roles. Other related public advocacy and government affairs roles Government relations and public policy advocacy expertise, with strong preference for experience and knowledge of camera-based traffic enforcement, as well as transportation, education, and technology-related issues.
BusPatrol is seeking a sharp and savvy leader to join our team as the Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Government Relations. This role is ideal for someone who is a political strategy thought leader with superb writing and oral communication skills, impeccable research abilities, and a keen eye for detail concerning state and local laws. We are seeking a strong team leader who thrives in the dynamic world of public policy, coalition building, and communications strategy around leveraging technology to advance traffic safety causes. The SVP will play a critical role in shaping legislation and advancing company business development to expand growth opportunities and safety impact. The SVP will also serve a key conduit to our operations, technology/product, legal, implementation and account management teams around policy requirements and compliance. Lastly, the SVP will serve at times as a public-facing evangelist for the company at conferences, on panels, and interviews with media concerning traffic safety and technology, and support white paper development to position and promote the quantitative safety impact of our programs.
Responsibilities
- Conduct excellent state-by-state policy research and analysis to understand the differences between various state laws.
- Lead the drafting and negotiation of legislation, demonstrating skill in compromise and the art of negotiation.
- Manage and lead a team of in-house government relations staff and numerous contract lobbyists across the country.
- Determine compensation and incentives for contract lobbyists and manage contractor relationships.
- Advocate for state-by-state policy efforts and exhibit thought leadership in coalition building and creativity.
- Serve as a key conduit between company growth efforts and account implementations, explaining key points of law to tech, ops, government ops, finance, account management, and implementation teams.
- Position BusPatrol as a traffic safety technology thought leader through white paper development and attending traffic safety conferences.
- Represent BusPatrol at safety events, conferences, panels, TV, and radio, serving as a company evangelist.
Qualifications
- Combination of 10+ years experience in public advocacy, government affairs, and/or lobbying at the state or larger municipality level; senior-level public policy making and/or public administration roles in federal, state, or local government
- Expertise in government relations and public policy advocacy, particularly in transportation and/or camera-based traffic enforcement, education, and technology-related issues.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence, build consensus, negotiate, and educate internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience with public speaking and media relations is strongly preferred.
- A continuous learner with a passion for political advocacy and child, transportation, and public safety spheres.
- Proficient with MS Office tools.
- Highly organized, self-starter, and problem solver.
- A Juris Doctorate/law degree is preferred; however, an advanced degree in public administration or a similar field will be accepted.
