Work Designation. Depending on your location within the continental US, this role may be hybrid or remote.

  • If you live within 50 miles of the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be hybrid. This means you will be expected to work in the office for at least 60% of the work week. You will work from your home (within the continental US) for the remaining portion of the work week. Details of this schedule will be discussed with your leadership. 
  • If you live more than 50 miles from the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be remote. This means you will be expected to work from your home, within the continental US. If the role is remote, there may be occasions that you are requested to come to the office based on business need. Any requests to come to the office would be communicated with you in advance.

What does it take to be successful in this role?

  • Proven commercial experience with AWS Cloud 

  • Experience with Financial management and budget control 

  • Experience of delivering Agile solutions for customers/clients located in different time zones

  • Solid knowledge of surrounding technologies including design patterns and modern standards
  • Great leadership skills to work effectively with peers within and across organizations
  • Deep understanding of software development lifecycle and methodologies.
  • Solid written and interpersonal communication with the ability to deliver compelling presentations
  • Strong ability to manage and execute on multiple project timelines and manage competing priorities
  • Expertise in product operating model and scaled agile

 

Education & Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field
  • Eight or more years of relevant technical and business experience
  • Five years of managerial experience in a complex business environment involving multiple business issues

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Use your technical knowledge to give expert feedback to engineers to support them on solving complex business problems and making technical decisions 

  • Take on people leader responsibilities across teams, using your own experience as a technologist to model the skills and behaviour necessary to be a fantastic engineer or engineering manager 

  • Where required, get hands-on with data, code, pipelines and technical solutions or proofs of concept

  • Contribute to the architectural design of solutions alongside Solution Architects, Engineering Managers and the rest of the team

  • Collaborate with Product Owners and Business SMEs to ensure that the team are building high-value customer-centric data driven software products that meet and exceed the needs of our customers 

  • Encourage autonomy amongst the engineering teams, and facilitate their decision-making, but also act as a decision-maker when necessary

  • Through active listening and questions, help engineers and engineering managers to reflect on their development and their goals to hone their engineering skills and capabilities  

  • Identify and encourage areas for growth, education, and career development for your team   

  • Initiate and monitor the improvement of software delivery processes by ensuring your teams are following best practices of automation and CI/CD 

  • Solve complex problems alongside your teams, taking an alternative approach to produce uncommon solutions that may not have been considered before 

  • Ensuring that test automation is at the front of the design & development process in your teams, and that QA is considered throughout the work undertaken by your team 

  • Guide the technical direction of the team, ensuring the development of scalable, maintainable, and high-quality software solutions
  • Oversee delivery, ensuring timelines are met, quality standards are maintained, and resources are efficiently utilized
  • Work closely with stakeholders to understand requirements, set priorities, and align the engineering team with business goals
  • Participation in and well-planned implementation of established quality improvement initiatives and processes
  • Measure the impact of your team and set clear expectations and goals
  • Partner with leadership to influence and drive org design, contribution and prioritization
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and technologies, and encourage the team to explore new tools, techniques, and best practices that can benefit the organization
  • Performs other duties as required

This compensation range is specific to the job level and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. The range has been created in good faith based on information known to Aflac at the time of the posting.  Compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case. This salary range does not include any potential incentive pay or benefits, however, such information will be provided separately when appropriate. The salary range for this position is $83,000 - $193,000.
