Job Description

Information about the Role, Line of Business and Team:

 

As the leader of the Crum & Forster Stop Loss (CFSL) team, this position is responsible for designing, building, and growing an industry-leading direct Employer Stop Loss organization.  This is a highly strategic and market-focused position that requires both exceptional leadership skills as well as deep industry experience with Employer Stop Loss and other Medical products.

 

This role will oversee the overall direction of the CFSL organization to drive profitable growth as well as innovation and excellence in all functional areas (sales, underwriting, medical underwriting, claims, cost containment, accounting, and all other operations).  Responsibilities include portfolio management, financial planning, strategic development, guiding leadership activities, coordinating on individual accounts and projects with actuaries, operations and other shared services, and negotiating contractual terms and conditions.  Open communication and collaboration with colleagues are critical to achieve divisional goals.

 

What you will do:

  • Develop and implement annual and long-term vision, strategy, and goals to drive profitability, new business growth and renewal retention of CFSL.
  • Drive and role model the A&H culture, values and C&F core competencies within their teams.
  • Inspire and develop leadership skills within the CFSL senior management team.
  • Provide the leadership necessary to maintain a motivated, productive and competent team of approximately 70 employees through open communication and delegation of responsibilities and authority.
  • Be a team leader and builder who has an eye for talent with the ability to maximize resources and capability to deliver business results.
  • Demonstrate strong mentoring, relationship building, planning and organizational skills.
  • Guide and direct team members in their personal and professional development.
  • Drive exceptional quality, performance excellence, accountability and alignment throughout the organization by setting goals for each department in collaboration with Crum & Forster A&H senior executive leaders as well as CFSL senior management, and providing quality feedback and performance appraisals within the team (midyear and annual).
  • Create a working environment where productivity can be sustained and accomplished, and where innovation and personal growth is encouraged and realized.
  • Build a high-performance culture by strengthening CFSL teams and ensuring development plans, talent pipelines, and succession plans are in place.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain internal and external relationships and conflicts.
  • Evaluate portfolio performance based on profitability metrics, lead strategic changes, and oversee execution of continuously improving portfolio in alignment with CFSL and MBU objectives
  • Develop and maintain underwriting rules, risk management principles and regulations to ensure compliance with all currently applicable corporate requirements and state and federal legislation
  • Establish an in-depth knowledge of CFSL products and services and clearly articulate the organization’s value proposition
  • Maintain awareness of market trends, products, market participants and competitive practices, identify emerging threats to the organization, and analyze and evaluate new developments and trends in the market to identify business potential and expansion opportunities
  • Drive product development with respect to distribution considerations, underwriting considerations, and compliance considerations
  • Oversee the development of mission-critical applications, technology and processes to support the organization’s success
  • Coordinate reinsurance support including negotiation of terms and conditions and execution of reinsurance agreements
  • Leading participant in the development of and presentation at strategic annual planning; will also drive training, initiatives and projects.
  • Represent the organization at functions, public meetings and industry events.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

What YOU will bring to C&F:

  • Bachelor's degree from an Accredited institution required and advanced degree a plus
  • Underwriting and industry designations applicable to area of specialization a plus
  • 15+ years of stop loss experience required with a minimum of 5 years of stop loss underwriting experience
  • 2+ years’ experience with reinsurance structures and contracts
  • 5+ years of multidisciplinary management experience with a proven track record in leading large teams and achieving results
  • Strong computer skills and Microsoft Office skills including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Connexure a plus
  • Monthly travel to Phoenix, AZ required in addition to other travel as required
  • Advanced knowledge of ESL and ESL underwriting at the case and portfolio levels
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, state and federal filing regulations and guidelines
  • Diverse and deep insurance and reinsurance experience across multiple products and operational functions
  • Strong grasp of underwriting reporting and financial concepts
  • Exceptional leadership and management skills to drive and deliver outcomes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills, and the ability to both disseminate a vision at the highest level as well as understand the details.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact successfully with internal and external clients
  • Growth mindset with a solutions and service orientation and a focus on continuous improvement
  • High energy professional with a strong business acumen and executive-level critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Crum & Forster is committed to ensuring a workplace free from discriminatory pay disparities and complying with applicable pay equity laws.  Salary ranges are available for all positions at this location, taking into account roles with a comparable level of responsibility and impact in the relevant labor market and these salary ranges are regularly reviewed and adjusted in accordance with prevailing market conditions. The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $206,100 to a maximum of $302,300. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee’s contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
