Role Summary

The Regional Sales Director, Americas is responsible for development and execution of new business and retention strategies for academic, government and corporate customers in North, Central and South America.

This role has responsibility for growing revenue and developing relationships with key consortia groups and senior library management in region as well as building and maintaining good relationships with partner sales organizations. Expanding take-up of PLOS’s institutional business models to enable an equitable Open research future.

Responsibilities

  • Develop strategic opportunity map working collaboratively with Sales Operations, sales and retention plan for PLOS’ institutional customers in the Americas in line with PLOS’ strategy
  • Work collaboratively with Global Publishing Development, Marketing and other colleagues as appropriate to grow PLOS’s revenue and uptake of PLOS’s non-APC-based business models
  • Identify current and future market trends and maintain a knowledge of the scholarly publishing, Open Science and competitor landscape
  • Provide insight and thought leadership on opportunities and developments in regional markets
  • Ensure achievement of sales targets
  • Work closely with Sales Operations on customer and pricing proposals
  • Prepare accurate sales forecasts and growth plans for the Americas aligned with PLOS’s strategic goals
  • Contribute to the evolution and development of PLOS’s non-APC-based business models
  • Set and manage budgets/expenditure for sales activities in region
  • Keep abreast of regional publishing trends and work collaboratively with colleagues across PLOS to drive institutional engagement
  • Grow PLOS’s library and consortia network, working collaboratively with Global Publishing Development team members and partners across regions to build long-term relationships and maintain PLOS’s reputation as a thought leader and leverage wider strategic opportunities
  • Direct activities of PLOS’s partner sales agents in region, reviewing performance against objectives and recommending partnership options
  • Promote a culture built on teamwork, engagement and the highest level of personal ethics and cross-functional collaboration
  • Actively represent and promote PLOS as a thought leader across the scientific, scholarly communication, and higher education sectors through attendance and speaking at key meetings and events, and through leadership activities with like-minded organizations, with particular emphasis on Latin America
  • Participate in PLOS organizational projects as agreed
  • Provide customer and market feedback on existing and potential products

Knowledge and Skills

  • Domain knowledge in Academic market
  • Proven Influencing and consultative selling skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to successfully implement new strategies and business plans
  • Organizational skill to plan and manage resource allocation and budgets to agreed plans, reporting and acting according to changing circumstances
  • Proven ability to problem solve and pivot when required
  • Experience of CRM tool such as Salesforce is desirable

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience in science, technical and medical (STM) publishing

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Prolonged periods stationary at a desk and working on a computer
  • Some national and international travel will be required regularly.
  • Some flexibility to work across time zones

The base salary range we’ve established for this position is $`130,000 - $170,000. This role also included a sales incentive bonus plan. PLOS also offers a comprehensive benefits package summarized below.
