Principal Software Engineer

Red Hat is seeking a highly skilled Principal Software Engineer specializing in Linux on Edge to join our innovative engineering team. This role is pivotal in driving our Linux platform development, supporting standards for Margo and VPAC/E4S, and contributing to robust, scalable, and reliable Linux-based edge solutions. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the Linux kernel, upstream contribution experience, and familiarity with industry standards like Margo. Responsibilities:

Industry Standards Participation

- Actively represent the company at industry standards meetings related to Margo and VPAC/E4S, contributing technical expertise and feedback to guide the development and adoption of critical Linux and edge standards.-

- Collaborate with industry peers to align on common goals, facilitate communication between teams, and bring back insights to influence internal projects and strategic planning.

Linux Development

- Work closely with the community to advocate for changes that support edge computing requirements, driving improvements to core Linux components and ensuring compatibility with the latest standards.

Backporting and RHEL Integration

- Backport selected patches and updates to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and other relevant enterprise Linux distributions, ensuring that key enhancements are available for stable, enterprise-grade deployment on edge devices.

- Maintain alignment with RHEL’s lifecycle, contributing fixes, features, and security patches as necessary to ensure a robust and resilient Linux on Edge solution.

- Partner with the Quality Assurance (QA) team to develop a comprehensive and robust test plan that ensures software reliability, performance, and scalability on edge platforms.

 - Participate in test design, implementation, and execution, helping to troubleshoot and resolve issues and verifying that patches meet quality and performance standards

Qualifications:

Education

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent industry experience.

Experience

- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on Linux development, edge, embedded  computing solutions.

- Proven experience with Linux distributions, especially in enterprise enviroments (e.g., RHEL, CentOS).

- Previous involvement in industry standards bodies or committees for emerging technologies is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

- Proficiency in C/C++ and strong experience with kernel development, Linux subsystems, and patch creation.

- Some experience in contributing to Linux upstream, including familiarity with kernel mailing lists, patch review processes, and collaboration with the open-source community.

- Solid understanding of backporting techniques, RHEL packaging, and release processes.

- Familiarity with edge computing technologies, architectures, and performance considerations.

Soft Skills

- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.

- Collaborative mindset, with a passion for working across teams and disciplines to achieve high-impact outcomes.

- Excellent problem-solving skills, with an analytical approach to troubleshooting and debugging complex issues.

The salary range for this position is $163,420.00 - $269,640.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications.

Pay Transparency

Red Hat determines compensation based on several factors including but not limited to job location, experience, applicable skills and training, external market value, and internal pay equity. Annual salary is one component of Red Hat’s compensation package. This position may also be eligible for bonus, commission, and/or equity. For positions with Remote-US locations, the actual salary range for the position may differ based on location but will be commensurate with job duties and relevant work experience.
