Linux Engineer II

Overview
The Linux Engineer II will be part of a Linux team in the 24x7 operational support of TierPoint managed services customers. The successful candidate will demonstrate advanced expertise in Linux operating systems. The candidate must also have outstanding customer service skills, and the ability to translate complex technical issues into common language. The Linux engineer reports to the OS Team lead, OS Services.
Responsibilities
- Provides quality internal and external customer service surrounding the Company values.
- Manage the flow of incoming customer requests to maintain Customer Request Fulfillment process expectations
- Communicate expectations, assignments, and responsibilities clearly and professionally.
- Participate in an on-call escalation support rotation to ensure 24x7x365 coverage for critical infrastructure and customer systems.
- Plan, install, and provide daily operational support for managed customer Unix/Linux environments
- Ensure timely resolution of high severity incidents, including communications, reporting, and tracking of follow-ups.
- Create technical documentation for customer environments, processes, standards, technical training, and support procedures.
- Collaborate closely with other operations teams and architecture to efficiently resolve service incidents; ensuring service availability levels are met.
- Review and approve changes in Linux operations. Collaborate with sales, engineering, and service teams to provide input into customer solutions that are not standard product offerings.
- Desire to improve upon existing systems and automate processes, including writing and maintaining documentation
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Excellent customer facing communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Expert level troubleshooting ability of Linux / UNIX platforms:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8 and higher
- Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS and higher
- Familiar with cloud environments (Azure, AWS)
- Experience working with virtualization technologies
- Proficient in one or more Linux / UNIX specific scripting languages
- Proficient in one or more configuration management systems (Ansible, Chef, Puppet)
- Experience in complex multi data center environments with 24x7, mission critical operations
- Adequate professional experience and knowledge to perform Job Responsibilities
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritize and organize effectively
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to work both independently and with others
- Ability to operate in a fast moving, team-oriented, collaborative environment with tight deadlines
- Proficiency in using MS Office Suite and Windows-based computer applications
Preferred Experience
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience of managing enterprise Linux / UNIX environments
- Previous service provider experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information technology, engineering, computer science or equivalent experience.
