At Hinkley Point C (HPC) a multi-£bn programme is procuring equipment and building two new nuclear reactors, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.

 

We are looking for a Site Inspector to join our Internal Nuclear Regulation (INR) Site Inspection Team, part of the Safety & Schedule Assurance Directorate. As a Site Inspector, you will ensure the highest levels of nuclear, environmental and industrial safety and assure that the Site operations are compliant with company requirements, relevant legislation and regulatory expectations for UK and international good practice, while providing oversight and assurance of the construction, mechanical and electrical installation, and commissioning phases of the HPC project. 

 

This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person with experience of working on nuclear installations or major construction projects, to be involved in making a major contribution to Britain’s move to reduce carbon emissions.

What you’ll be doing…

 

A strong, competent and respected internal regulator is essential for the long-term success of Nuclear New Build. The INR Site Inspection team provide on-site independent oversight and challenge of nuclear safety, environmental and industrial safety, quality, security and emergency preparedness, using different complementary techniques, and feedback findings to the functions concerned and to the Site’s senior management team. The team operates as part of a larger INR department which includes technical, quality, supply chain and security assurance.

 

The role of a Site Inspector is varied. As a Site Inspector you must be able to work independently and as part of a wider INR function. You will be required to communicate at all levels within the site organisation, interfacing with staff, contractors and managers at a working level, providing feedback to senior site managers, the Internal Nuclear Regulation Director and the Safety & Schedule Assurance Director. This position requires a strong understanding of highly complex / highly technical projects and of the UK regulatory regime.

 

Who you are…

 

To be successful in this role, you will have a deep understanding of UK regulatory nuclear, or heavily regulated industry, standards and expectations, along with detailed knowledge of best practices and codes in construction and industrial safety. You should be able to influence and collaborate effectively at all levels within a diverse project organisation. Innovation and a holistic approach are key, as you’ll need to think critically and implement actions with engagement and thoughtfulness. As a self-starter, you’ll bring strong organisational skills and the ability to manage priorities efficiently. Exceptional presentation and communication skills are essential, along with strong ability to build relationships with key stakeholders.

 

Although desirable however, not essential, we’re also looking for the below for you to bring to this role:

 

Experience in an environmental safety role within the Nuclear Industry

  • Knowledge of the Radioactive Substances Regulations and the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations.
  • Knowledge of relevant nuclear industry and international standards from organisations such as the ONR, WANO and the IAEA.
  • Knowledge of other relevant UK Environmental and Health and Safety legislation including Nuclear Site Licence requirements, HSAW74, CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Able to deliver difficult messages by creating confidence, through crafting of strong justifications and arguments and tailoring messages to suit the audience.
  • The ability to influence and to provide constructive challenge which is accepted by others.
  • The ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
