Job Summary:

As an Environmental Engineer in our Groundwater Protection and Reuse Unit, you will conduct technical reviews, and provide technical and operational assistance as needed to both advanced water purification (AWP) facilities and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). You will also be responsible for contributing knowledge to the AWP Operator Certification Program and the AWP policies. Additional requirements include the review of complex engineering and design plans to support permitting requirements, including the design of onsite WWTP/AWP systems. Knowledge and understanding of advanced treatment technologies for Drinking Water Treatment and understanding of Safe Drinking Water Act is required. Technical expertise in waste water treatment and Drinking Water Treatment engineering, design and operation will be critical for the selected candidate in addition to customer service and mentorship of internal staff.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Job Duties:

• Conduct site visits and problem solve compliance issues at WWTP/AWP facilities
• Provide Technical Assistance to Operators
• Review of Best Available Demonstrated Control Technologies (BADCT) to ensure that designs are protective of Groundwater and Reuse applications
• Provide guidance to staff and customers on problems identified in technical reviews
• Perform environmental calculations based on provided methodologies and engineering disciplines
• Assist in preparing environmental guidance documents and mentorship of staff
• Prepare and create technical writing documents, including engineering memos and permits
• Serve in a consultant capacity to advise and guide the development of programs through strong research skills, presentation abilities, and team collaboration
• Proficient ability to interpret the Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) and relevant Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) relating to the Aquifer Protection Program

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• An ability to perform at a high level independently and on teams with little guidance and supervision
• Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of civil or environmental engineering; State and Federal environmental regulations; Agency policies and processes and state and federal regulations regarding administration of Agency decisions
• Strong customer service skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks and complete assignments by applicable deadlines; to synthesize feedback and adjust plans accordingly; to understand and interpret environmental rules and statutes to determine whether permit applications or plans and reports meet the requirements or request legal interpretation for standard issues; to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and collaborate with a range of teams, including adaptability and receptiveness to feedback from various types of stakeholders.

Selective Preference(s):

• Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Engineering with a focus in one or more of the following; Environmental, Civil, or Chemical Engineering, or other relevant field.

• Level 2: 2 years of engineering experience, Master’s or Doctorate degree may substitute for two years of experience.

• Level 3: 5 or more years of engineering experience, Master’s degree may substitute for two years of experience Doctorate may substitute for four years of experience.

• If a candidate is considered as a level 3, an ‘Engineer in-Training’ or ‘Fundamentals in Engineering’ certification is required through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration or equivalent organization in reciprocal jurisdiction.
