This is a fully remote position and can be based anywhere within the U.S.

Lead the strategic planning function of the Enterprise Strategy department responsible for strategic planning processes, methods, and tools across the strategy cascade from enterprise to functions / departments, including investment and innovation processes.

In this role, you will work with multiple stakeholders, including executive leadership and various cross-functional departments, to successfully implement key initiatives, driving strategic planning that connects strategy development to strategy realization.

You will impact the organization through exploring market-leading strategic planning approaches, leading strategic planning efforts, implementing investment and innovation processes that support executive decision-making, and proliferate high quality strategic planning practices across functions / departments.

As a key expert in the Enterprise Strategy Center of Excellence, you will serve as a “player-coach”, meaning you will tactically develop and implement work and products, in addition to serving as an expert coach and consultant to functions across the enterprise.

This leader will think critically, learn from mistakes, adapt quickly, and influence others.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is a key leader on the Enterprise Strategy team, influencing key leaders and partners across the enterprise, accountable for overall design and implementation of:

  • Enterprise Strategic Planning approach, methods, frameworks, templates, and tools (e.g. multi-year strategic plans, one-year strategic plan analysis and views, department strategic plans, etc.)
    • Lead the development of enterprise strategic plan framework and connected templates, working with strategic planning partners in Enterprise Strategy and across the enterprise to develop common language and template set; advise and coach on cascading the enterprise plan to functions.
    • Lead the development and continuous improvement of an enterprise strategic planning cycle of meaningful documentation, reports, meetings, and decision-making moments (e.g. quarterly / annual assumption and market data tests, prioritization of initiatives and goals, etc.) including monthly / quarterly / annual monitoring and reporting the Executive Team and Board of Directors.
    • Collaborates with key partners (e.g. financial planning, technology, etc.) to assess resource allocation across pillar and support pillar leaders and drives strategic decision making.
  • Enterprise investment approach, process, templates, and tools (e.g. initial business case development, periodic reprioritization of strategic plan investment, etc.).
    • Lead the development of investment processes and templates aligned to organizational needs, working collaboratively to ensure buy-in and adoption, and driving decision-making aligned to strategic plan goals and processes.  
    • In conjunction with Enterprise Strategy team, finance, people, and pillar leadership, review and guide finalization of identified strategic investment opportunities to ensure resource allocation and alignment to strategic plan goals.
    • Develop or coach others in the development of investment business cases, articulate the value proposition and determine ROI for mission / revenue / operations growth initiatives aligned with strategic plan goals.
  • Enterprise Strategy decision-making frameworks
    •  Lead the development and adoption of a decision-making framework for Chief Executives and Senior Executives across pillars.
    • Conduct strategic plan and business case analysis, synthesize data from across the enterprise, prepare materials for and facilitate engagement with senior level leadership to drive decisions on strategic plan development or shifts.
  • Enterprise innovation approach, process, templates, and portfolio (e.g. idea cultivation, pitch sessions, decisions to pilot, etc.)
    • Lead the cross-functional development of an enterprise innovation approach to cultivate idea generation and the appropriate process for development, review, pilot and approval aligned to strategic plan goals.
    • Build community of innovators across the enterprise to build innovation momentum.

As part of a flexible internal consulting function working across the enterprise, Director is also responsible for direct partnership with entire Enterprise Strategy department to manage and prioritize requests and complete any other duties as assigned from end-to-end.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or similarly related field or equivalent experience; MBA, MA in Nonprofit Management, or relevant advance degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in strategic planning, strategic operations, and/or strategy development / management
  • 10+ years of collaborative leadership including engagement of senior and executive leaders
  • Strong knowledge of American Cancer Society programs, strategies and organizational infrastructure or equivalent experience operating in a complex environment in the nonprofit or for profit sector.
  • 3+ years of experience designing and implementing end-to-end enterprise strategic planning processes.
  • 3+ years of experience serving as a key leader in enterprise investment or resource decision-making processes.
  • 3+ years of experience designing and facilitating meetings of 3-200+ attendees, crossing all levels of leadership
  • People leader experience including leading through influence; ability to effectively manage cross-functional teams.
  • Non-profit strategy or management consulting experience preferred.

The starting rate is $130,000 to $150,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
