Introduction  

The Parliamentary Security Department (PSD) is responsible for physical and personnel security across both Houses of Parliament and provides support to Members and staff when away from the Estate. Its purpose is to keep Parliament safe and open for business.

The Role  

The security of MP's, their staff and families, is of utmost importance to Parliament. The teams within the service, monitor threats, assess risk, manages deployment and maintenance of the security measures installed in MP's offices and homes. The teams will also manage the provision of security and protection services to Members. As Deputy Director of Security for Parliament (Members Security), you will lead this work, ensuring our security offer to Members of both Houses is threat-driven, risk assessed, effective, and customer focussed; responsive to the many and varied security needs of Members.  

You will have three team leaders as direct reports and associated support staff.  As an experienced and resilient security professional, with very strong interpersonal skills, you will build relationships of trust with Members, Committees, the Speaker’s Office, the Whips and senior stakeholders in the administrations of both Houses to deliver these initiatives and to resolve sensitive security issues and concerns with tact.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include: 

  • Ensure that the different elements of the Members’ Security risk assessment and security measures operate efficiently as a system and interact effectively with PLaIT, national policing, JTAC, NPSA, Home Office and Cabinet Office.
  • Ensure that threat levels and vulnerabilities of the Member cohort remain under constant review and that mitigations flex in response, overseeing development of new mitigations as necessary.
  • Manage individual Member security cases with sensitivity and credibility, in close co-ordination with MPS and regional police. 

Skills and Experience   

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate: 

  • Ability to apply security expertise to achieve strategic and operational risk reduction
  • Extensive expertise in personal and physical security issues, developed by working with government security institutions and agencies; and familiarity with personal and physical security processes.
  • Able to negotiate outcomes with tact and diplomacy, can have difficult conversations while maintaining relationships, remaining calm and constructive under pressure.
