Why Your Role Matters

The User Experience Specialist is a key position within the Library and is responsible for embedding user- centred / human-centred design approaches and practices across the Library digital and physical presence. The role aims to support projects pertaining to the development of service innovations utilising UX/CX methodologies that are focused on improving the user experience by extending and enhancing Library services and resources.

The role will have primary responsibility for the design of cohesive digital experiences across the Library’s digital and physical presence and will work closely with colleagues in the Digital Experience and Innovation unit and across the Library to operationalise insights and designs.

The User Experience Specialist reports into the Associate Director, Digital Experience and Innovation, has no direct reports, but will lead project staff as required.

Specific accountabilities for this role include

  • Lead the Library’s user experience research programs to assess current trends and client behaviour, experiment with new and emerging technologies and deliver actionable insights and solutions
  • Develop user testing practices, techniques, and methodologies to identify design problems/service improvements, and devise relevant solution as required to deliver a consistent and effective user experience across a diverse Library digital presence
  • Lead the adoption of user-centred design approaches and best practices across the Library’s digital projects, provide digital design development advice to Library staff and deliver workshops/Expert sessions aimed at sharing insights with Library staff
  • Mentor Library staff to develop and implement work processes, tools, and methodologies to deliver effective and high-quality user-centred designs for digital channels developments
  • Draw on insights to design interface specifications, including flow diagrams, wireframes, prototypes (high and low fidelity), and style guides
  • Provide strategic advice and reporting to key university stakeholders regarding UNSW digital presence, and emerging trends and developments in the field

Who You Are

We seek a candidate who aligns with UNSW values and purpose, who is user-centric and who thrives on always making the experience better for the library users. You will have to come with:

  • A solid experience in the application of Human Centre Design, user experience and co-design research methods, practices (e.g., usability testing, interviews, surveys etc), and project planning
  • A strong understanding of client-centric design and UX/CX principles and methodologies with experience in prototyping and testing, developing user journey maps, personas, empathy maps, etc
  • A Library qualification would be preferred but not essential – however an interest in the Library services is key
  • Broad experience or understanding of the education sector and galleries/libraries/museums would be desirable
  • Experience in UI development tools such as Sketch and Figma, as well as, Adobe Creative Suite, Axure or equivalent tools
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and experience with creating and implementing design solutions for a variety of projects across channels and platforms
  • Demonstrated outstanding written and verbal communication skills and the ability to negotiate and influence people at all levels in a multi-stakeholder environment

This role is full time permanent so we won’t be able to offer sponsorship – only candidates with full ongoing working rights will be considered.

The role operates during regular business hours, Monday to Friday. Whilst the team works in a hybrid environment, this is not a role that can be done fully remotely. We expect the successful candidate to work from UNSW Kensington Campus.
