NOTE: This role is required to be located within DC-regional commutable distance and able to commute to the DC office on an as-needed basis.The Human Resources (HR) team works to find, grow and retain talent and build the NGS community. HR is dedicated to designing and building people and total reward strategies that enhance employee culture and the employee experience at NGS. The HR department includes the Business Partners, Benefits, Compensation, Recruiting, Learning & Development and Internal Communications teams, and it leads the internship program and the staff-facing DEI efforts at NGS.
The Total Rewards Partner is responsible for the overall day-to-day administration and operation of the Society’s benefits and wellness programs for U.S. and international based employees and retirees. This position administers a broad range of benefits and transaction services throughout the life cycle of an employee regarding eligibility, coverage, and various benefits matters. This role serves as liaison between employees and service providers while engaging with other HR representatives and the payroll department for gathering information and resolving problems.
Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
Administers and maintains the active and retired employees health plans, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance program and all other ancillary benefits programs. Responsible for ensuring employees and retirees understanding and satisfaction of health benefit programs. Maintains a positive relationship with employees, retirees and vendors. Activities include, but not limited to; new hire orientations, returning phone calls and responding to all emails that come through the benefits inbox and slack. (30%)
Functions as a liaison between benefit vendors and the Applications team to ensure proper benefits setup and information flow between systems. Audit the related information between systems regularly and solve discrepancies. Conducts ongoing verification and quality assurance to ensure data reliability and integrity on the Society’s Enterprise management system. Resolves and audits claims, enrollment, eligibility, and related issues for active and retired employees on health and welfare plans. (20%)
Responsible for the administrative components, and serve as a back up to the Total Rewards Director, for leave administration and Workers’ Compensation. (15%)
Support the administrative components of the annual open enrollment process. To include; preparing census files, HRIS system testing, emails to staff, preparing materials to supplement overall communications, after enrollment audits. (10%)
Responsible for gathering data needed for annual ACA reporting, non-discrimination testing, and the implementation of new benefits plans. (10%)
Processes and oversees preparation of invoices and premium reports/claim payments for assigned benefit plans. Reconciles vendor invoicing issues. (10%)
Compiles and maintains internal benefits records and procedures documentation. Assists with special projects, to include wellness activity planning, within the benefits area. (5%)
What You’ll Bring
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Certification in Human Resources and/or benefits helpful.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
3+ years of experience in all phases of benefits and HRIS related activities.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
Experience in administering health and welfare plans
General knowledge of leave administration to include FMLA, state mandated leave benefits and disability plans
Knowledge of ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, and IRS plan regulations
Good interpersonal, communication and group presentation skills
Strong problem solving and research skills
Technically skilled in Excel, Word and HRIS
Must have strong attention to detail and quality of work including good proofreading skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability and willingness to commute to the DC office on an as-needed basis to complete new hire benefits orientation and other tasks as they arise

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
The salary range for this position is $76,000 - $80,000.

Job Designation
Remote - Our Remote designation includes staff who must work in another location in the U.S. or abroad, such as our regional leads for our Education and International teams or regional fundraisers in Advancement. Staff may also be designated as Remote by their supervisors (with approval by the Senior Team lead) because of their job duties, and are afforded this status when it is beneficial to NGS, their respective team, and the employee.Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
