Overview
GovCIO is currently hiring for a Senior Technical Writer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Technology Management Services (HTMS) Contract. The Technical Writer will be responsible for development of multiple artifacts that will be intended for senior leadership, the quality assurance of various artifacts/documents provided to key VA Medical Center (VAMC) personnel through the course of their Electronic Health Record Transition. This position is fully remote within the United States with core hours of operation from Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm ET.
Responsibilities
- Writes, rewrites and/or edits technical documentation and team communications/artifacts.
- Leverages advanced writing skills to translate complicated issues from multiple information sources into a clear point of view to create a compelling, concise, and well-written narrative.
- Develops ad hoc artifacts for a variety of the intended audiences, including executive VA leadership.
- Creates documentation based on newly identified processes/procedures through the course of each fiscal year.
- Collaborates with subject matter experts to aid in the development of comprehensive deliverables.
- Acquires subject knowledge through active participation in daily team support and standard team activities.
- Reviews technical documentation for quality of content and formatting.
- Conducts communications gap analysis to determine strengths of current approaches and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Ability to draft accurate, succinct meeting minutes, often with short turnaround times
- Support continuous improvement by reviewing and refining existing artifacts that are shared directly to key VAMC personnel during each site Electronic Health Record transition.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Business Management, Computer Science, Information Systems, Operations Research or related fields
- 8+ Years of experience plus 3-5 years of relevant experience or 5 to 7 years of relevant experience may be substituted for education
- Certifications in relevant UX software
- Write and edit technical and nontechnical narratives as necessary to prepare compelling content and contribute to the development of best practices, SOPs, formats, and other guidelines to ensure final products reflect the quality of our services.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and interview operational and technical subject matter experts to develop content that is compliant and responsive to client needs.
- Work closely with Solution Architects/Technical Leads to understand technical details and requirements to translate them into consumable formats.
- Edit materials drafted by others to improve their quality and ensure they are editorially correct without altering their technical accuracy or meaning.
- Apply editorial styles and standards consistently and appropriately across documentation.
- Deliver high quality documentation at the detailed level.
- Identify and correct grammatical and punctuation errors, faulty sentence construction, ambiguous or conflicting statements/information, formatting, and consistency issues with both styles/fonts and content.
- Identify opportunities to create visually appealing, effective graphics in drafted content.
- Participate in final production processes, including desktop publishing, quality control, and white glove reviews.
- Research and verify acronym definitions and generate glossaries.
- Help maintain supporting information, such as past performance and technical history, that need to be customized for submissions.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Preferred experience within the Enterprise VA projects.
- Experience operating in an agile environment is desirable but not required.
- Ability to work independently and conduct research with minimal guidance and supervision.
- Able to communicate effectively with all organizational levels.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, technical documentation, problem-solving, process improvement, organizational, and coordination skills.
- Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Able to prioritize tasks and work comfortably on deadline-driven efforts.
- Knowledge of industry standard best practices and/or widely used style guides.
- Use of documentation storage, collaboration, and versioning tool. SharePoint use and some administration is a PLUS
- Able to adapt writing style to different audiences.
- Knowledge of MS Teams, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, and MS Office (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and ability to learn new applications; advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, particularly the use of styles and creating templates, preferred.
Clearance: Must be able to obtain/maintain a suitability/public trust clearance with the VA.

Posted Pay Range
The posted pay range, if referenced, reflects the range expected for this position at the commencement of employment, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and internal equity. The total compensation package for this position may also include other compensation elements, to be discussed during the hiring process. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the GovCIO reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, GovCIO or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
