Job DescriptionNREL’s Energy Security and Resilience (ESR) Center is seeking applicants with experience and technical knowledge in supply chains research, particularly as it relates to renewable energy technologies. The role will be responsible for analyzing market trends including production, shipping, projected demand, and other data, as well as producing written products, presenting results to audiences with disparate backgrounds, and proposing new topics to aid in understanding renewable energy and supply chain developments. The successful candidate is not expected to be an expert in all subject areas but should possess some experience with energy topics and supply chains.
The chosen applicant will help develop supply chain studies that leverage NREL expertise in energy technology developments to support a variety of interested parties, including federal government partners.
This position reports to the Strategic Energy Security (SES) Group Manager in the ESR Center and can accommodate a hybrid work arrangement. Fully remote can be considered, but the preference is to have someone onsite for a hybrid work arrangement.

Basic QualificationsThis role can be hired at a level IV or level V.Researcher IV:
Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience . Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, communication, problem solving and project management skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
Researcher V:
Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience . Applies advanced scientific technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Considered a national subject matter expert. Demonstrates leadership in a number of areas, including all team, task and/or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated management of complex and/or impactful projects. Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required QualificationsMust be able to obtain and maintain a DOE (L or Q) security clearance and SCI. SCI access may require a polygraph examination.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE O 472.2A for additional information.
- Experience researching supply chains or renewable energy markets.
- Excellent analytic, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proven problem-solving and negotiation skills.
- Ability to interact professionally with sponsors and officials from other government agencies.
- Interest in renewable energy technologies – sometimes referred to as future energy technologies or advanced energy technologies – and applications with a focus on identifying global trends and developments impacting U.S. national security.
- Willingness to acquire new knowledge and learn new skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with a diverse set of colleagues, NREL SMEs, and external collaborators.
- Prior experience with or knowledge related to energy efficiency and renewable energy, such as future scenarios, supply chain, international technology developments, etc.
- Experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD), or other government agencies.
- Experience conducting analyses that bridge unclassified and classified workflows.
- Preference will be given to candidates with technical depth in technologies within NREL’s mission space.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Researcher V / Annual Salary Range: $117,200 - $211,000Job Profile: Researcher IV / Annual Salary Range: $97,800 - $176,000NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
