About the Internship

This internship is an opportunity for students interested in learning more about sustainability and energy efficiency, developing project management and peer-to-peer networking skills, and preparing for future professional opportunities. This program aims to increase awareness of energy efficiency and teach students about monitoring energy consumption patterns in commercial, industrial, and public sector facilities. Interns will work with CLEAResult’s Strategic Energy Management (SEM) team to assist in ComEd’s SEM offerings either through data analytics, engineering or program delivery. This opportunity allows you to align your skillset and interest to the department of your choice.

What is Strategic Energy Management (SEM)?

SEM is a holistic approach to saving energy via behavioral & process changes, and low/no-cost operations and maintenance activities. The energy savings are measured and tied to actions that persist and grow over time.

SEM builds a culture of corporate sustainability and focuses on training and engaging everyone that works within a customer’s facility.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Complete training, including understanding code of conduct and how to interact professionally with customers, learning how to use utility energy usage monitoring tools, and learning how to analyze and interpret energy consumption patterns.

SEM Delivery Track (Level 1):

  • Assist in monitoring participant electricity consumption data twice weekly to identify abnormal energy use patterns and events.
  • Attend monthly meetings with coach and SEM program participants.
  • Learn how to use, and provide inputs on, tracking and management systems.
  • Assist in analysis and projects that help the ComEd SEM program to innovate.
  • Learning opportunities to understand the energy efficiency utility programs and SEM.

Data Analytics Track (Level 2):

  • Updating tracking energy models with weather, energy, and site data. 
  • Assisting analysts with data processing prior to load sheet creation.  
  • Setting up reports, filling in sections from model validation, adding screenshots. 
  • Collaborating on a strategic initiatives. 
  • Students applying for this track should have completed the Level 1 internship or have relevant coursework or experience

Engineering Track (Level 2):

  • Learn how to identify energy-saving measures and develop opportunity registers
  • Learn how to estimate and practice estimating savings for common energy-saving measures with real world approaches
  • Attend/shadow SEM energy scans
  • Develop technical education materials for SEM participants where needed.
  • Students applying for this track should have completed the Level 1 internship or have relevant coursework or experience

Position Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Currently enrolled as a high school or college student
  • Internship is remote; flexible, 6-12 hours per week at $18/hr. (Engineering track requires 8-14 hours per week).
  • Commitment to the duration of the internship: June 2, 2025 through August 15, 2025
  • Understanding code of conduct and how to interact professionally with program participant.
