Are you skilled in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to resolve design and construction challenges in a highly regulated environment?

The Opportunity


Working as our next Steelwork Engineer within our Joint Design Office (JDO), you will ensure all design and construction changes are delivered on time to meet construction needs. You will participate in readiness reviews for design packages released for construction, collaborating closely with design teams, contractors, and construction teams to maintain the technical quality of responses, adherence to the construction programme, and safety standards.

What you will be doing


Reporting to the Area Lead, you will be responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of support to new nuclear build projects, operations, and decommissioning. This includes maintaining a thorough, demonstrable, and sustainable technical understanding of the plant, its systems, and the associated safety case. You will manage the site construction configuration, ensuring any design issues are addressed by forwarding them to the on-site designer representative when necessary. Additionally, you will oversee design changes and review and accept site-specific design documents to maintain consistency and quality. Additional roles and responsibilities include:

 

  • Approve design changes proposed by contractors or designers through Requests for Information, Field Change Requests, or Non-Conformance Reports.
  • Support the Joint Design Office (JDO) in the handover of Design Packages for construction, ensuring delegated responsibilities are fulfilled.
  • Ensure all processes align with project quality procedures.
  • Manage CDM aspects related to design changes during construction, including fulfilling the role of Principal Designer.
  • Oversee nuclear safety acceptance by conducting surveillance on design changes during construction.
  • Ensure a clear golden thread between the high-level safety case and design in the review and acceptance process, supporting operational safety.
     

Who you are


In this position, you will serve as a key liaison between construction contractors, designers, and Project Managers, working independently while staying focused on results. You will manage the site change process, respond to construction queries, oversee nuclear and environmental categorisation, conduct surveillance of drawings, models, and technical documentation, and chair meetings with key stakeholders.


We’re ideally looking for you to hold a Degree in Structural or Mechanical Engineering, along with experience, ideally in structural design or construction. A solid understanding of Eurocode, particularly EC3, is essential, as is the ability to effectively handle structural drawings and models. Additional requirements for tis role also include:

 

  • Experience with design processes and activities, preferably within the Nuclear Industry.
  • Proficient in steel design codes and their application.
  • Skilled in designing with hazard and accidental safety case considerations.
  • Familiarity with UK CDM regulations and working in highly regulated industries.
  • Strong delivery focus, with the ability to set action plans and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Capable of working independently, even in high-pressure environments.
  • Proactive and pragmatic, with a hands-on approach to resolving challenges efficiently.
