About Prepared

Emergency centers, vital to our society, are often constrained by technology that dates back to the landline era. This presents a stark contrast to our current smartphone-centric, socially connected world. At Prepared, we bridge this gap with cutting-edge technology that harnesses the power of Artificial Intelligence to revolutionize how emergency calls are handled.  Our innovative technology is providing a suite of tools that significantly boost the capabilities of 911 dispatch centers and first responders. With our solutions implemented in over 800 cities across 48 states, we're positively impacting the lives of approximately 75 million people.

Fueled by a recent $16 million Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz and support from Gradient (Google’s AI Fund), we're accelerating our growth to become an integral part of every emergency call, reshaping global emergency response for a safer, more responsive world.

Joining the Prepared team means more than just a new role. It's a chance to be at the forefront of impactful tech that significantly improves public safety and touches lives across the globe. At Prepared, you're not just part of a team; you're a key player in a larger mission to foster a safer, more interconnected world.

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced data engineer to join our platform engineering team. As our first data engineer, you will be instrumental in establishing and developing Prepared’s data infrastructure from scratch. This is an opportunity to join a small, growing engineering org (currently 10 engineers) and make a large impact while operating with a high degree of autonomy and ownership.

You will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the data pipelines and infrastructure that power our analytics and product features. This role requires a blend of strategic vision and hands-on technical skills.

As an early member of the team, you will also play a key role in shaping the foundation of Prepared’s engineering culture.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable data pipelines and infrastructure

  • Collaborate with software engineers, product managers, and others across the business to understand data requirements

  • Optimize and manage our data storage solutions

  • Ensure data quality, reliability, and security across the data lifecycle

  • Develop and maintain ETL processes

  • Work with stakeholders to define data availability SLAs

  • Create and manage data models to support business intelligence and analytics

About You
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, software engineering with a data focus, or a related role

  • Knowledge of designing data pipelines from a variety of source (e.g. streaming, flat files, APIs)

  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL)

  • Experience with real-time data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Kafka, Spark Streaming)

  • Strong programming skills in common data-focused languages (e.g., Python)

  • Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools (e.g., Apache Airflow, Prefect)

  • Familiarity with AWS-based data solutions

  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts and technologies (e.g., Redshift, Snowflake)

  • Experience documenting data dependency maps and data lineage

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative

  • Proficiency in containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)

Bonus Points
  • Experience in an early-stage startup

  • Familiarity with cloud-agnostic data solutions

  • Knowledge of machine learning and AI applications in data engineering

  • Background in public safety or emergency response technology

  • Contributions to open-source data engineering projects

Pay Transparency

The base pay for this role is $200,000–$240,000 per year + company equity. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Prepared’s unlimited vacation program and free membership to One Medical.
