How You’ll Contribute

The Strategic Insights and Initiatives team works collaboratively and transparently across the organization to ensure that National Geographic Society’s activities further its goals and fulfill its mission by helping to guide organizational and programmatic strategies, identifying opportunities for learning, improvement, and efficiency, facilitating and driving alignment with organizational priorities, supporting strategic, high-priority projects and initiatives that increase organizational effectiveness, evaluating the impact of the Society’s work, and guiding the Society to data-informed decisions.

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Insights & Initiatives, the Strategic Insights Sr Specialist will help teams across the Society make data-driven decisions to improve outcomes, processes, products and offerings. The Sr. Specialist will conduct quantitative and qualitative applied research, assisting with designing evaluation studies, drafting and editing surveys and other research instruments, and analyzing and visualizing data for internal and external stakeholders. The Sr. Specialist will also assist with stakeholder engagement, and create easy-to-digest final reports, presentations, and data visualizations that clearly communicate findings and recommendations to internal and external audiences.

The ideal candidate is highly analytical, self-motivated, and has prior experience analyzing, synthesizing, and reporting on quantitative and qualitative data to facilitate decision-making. Candidates should also be organized, conscientious, passionate about research for a purpose, and possess strong interpersonal skills.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist with organizing and managing most aspects of applied research and evaluation studies, providing input on research methodology and sample design, creating qualitative or quantitative instruments, programming and pre-testing surveys, and deploying and monitoring research, with particular emphasis on NGS’ externally funded projects (30%)

  • Prepare and analyze survey data or other research outputs, draft insights, and create reports, presentations, data visualizations, and/or other means of communicating insights to cross-functional, internal audiences. (30%)

  • Conduct stakeholder engagement, facilitating meetings to design strategic research goals, obtain feedback, and provide data-driven recommendations with internal and external stakeholders (20%)

  • Support other team members and internal stakeholders with ad-hoc surveys and other Measurement and Evaluation requests. (20%)  

What You’ll Bring

Educational background

A bachelor’s degree in a social science or related field, and prior applied social science research and/or evaluation-related work experience required.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience   

4+ years of work experience required, with at least 1 year independently managing applied social science quantitative and qualitative research and reporting. 

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to independently design and implement quantitative and qualitative applied research, especially as it relates to business decisions

  • Skilled at quantitative and qualitative data analysis, including basic statistical analysis and qualitative coding

  • Experience with survey design, scripting, and fielding

  • Significant experience synthesizing and presenting complex data for a wide variety of audiences

  • Experienced user of Tableau, Excel and/or Google Sheets and survey software such as Survey Monkey or Qualtrics

  • Advanced user of Powerpoint, Google Slides and/or Keynote

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. A solid command of grammar, syntax, and usage is essential

  • Excellent and proven project coordination and time management skills, ability to set priorities, and deliver on time

  • Ability to proactively move projects forward effectively with minimal guidance

  • Superior attention to detail, accuracy, and consistency

Salary Information

The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The salary range for this position is $82,600 - $87,000.

Job Designation

Remote - Our Remote designation includes staff who must work in another location in the U.S. or abroad, such as our regional leads for our Education and International teams or regional fundraisers in Advancement. Staff may also be designated as Remote by their supervisors (with approval by the Senior Team lead) because of their job duties, and are afforded this status when it is beneficial to NGS, their respective team, and the employee.
