Sr. Software Engineer

The Department of Medicine is seeking a Sr. Software Engineer to contribute informatics and ontology expertise to the integration of biomedical terminologies and ontologies into the International Classification of Disease (ICD), revision 11, at the Foundation Component level (the ontological level). The candidate will work in close association with Dr. Chute, who led the ICD11 revision process at WHO.
Lead in the design and development of software supporting interoperability of data in disparate systems. Establish software lifecycle procedures and secure development practices, organize software testing, and mentor other developers. Work with stakeholders to establish the priority of software features and ensure that milestones are met.
This position is funded from August 1, 2024 - July 30, 2025.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct research and analysis of the linking of the ICD-11 Foundation with other sources. Work with collaborators to design algorithms and solutions. Coordinate research data analysis in support of project aims. Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication of research. Present research at conferences or seminars.

- Ensure that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Experience with ICD API programming.
- Management of development teams.
- Familiarity with ICD-11 coding practices.
- Example: Familiarity with major clinical data standards, and CDMs. Willingness and capacity to learn HL7 FHIR. Familiarity with major biomedical terminologies and classifications. Familiarity with the major CDMs. Familiarity and experience using data sets invoking CDMs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Six years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Computer Science with significant experience in computer science and/or health informatics.

Starting Salary Range: $43.84 - $76.82 HRLY ($35,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
