Sr. Manager, Product Design (Starter Growth)
United States, Canada, Mexico
Change.org is searching for a Senior Manager of Product Design. As a player-coach, your design thinking, leadership, and growth design skills will increase the number of petitions created by our users. You will report to our VP of Design as a key leader of the Product & Design team.
We’re a social impact business (a public benefit company), and the world's largest social change platform with 100 million users, 40,000+ campaigns launched on the site every month, and a 100% user-generated revenue model. Our users win campaigns for change once every hour. We’re working for a world where no one is powerless, and where creating change is a part of everyday life. We’re just getting started and hope you’ll join us!
From mobilizing over 5 million people to investigate the fires in the Amazon, to mobilizing nearly 3 million against war and famine in Yemen, to large-scale mobilizations for the people of Iran and against the war in Ukraine, and calling for racial justice in the US, many movements were born on Change.org. Dozens of local, national, and international victories are happening every day thanks to the strength of our members who are changing the lives of people around the world. We want to help them go even further and we need your help!
Key outcomes
- Develop a portfolio of features to increase the number of petitions started and succeeding on Change.org, from innovative new ideas to optimizations of current features
- Deepen our understanding of our users and the different ways they can start and promote petitions
- Develop and iterate on a design strategy that drives petition supporter activation through rapid testing, data-driven insights, and creative experimentation
- Coach and develop the designer on your team, with a particular focus on design thinking skills
The most important core competencies for the role are:
- Design Thinking and Innovation: You take a human-centered approach to problem-solving that opens up new possibilities for product features and real world impact. You are skilled at deep user research, iterative prototyping, and cross-functional collaboration to create solutions that align with both user needs and business goals.
- User Empathy: You center users' emotions, motivations, and pain points in your design process and you leverage qualitative research to uncover these insights. You can anticipate and map users’ emotional states at different touchpoints. Your designs reduce stress and uncertainty and inspire trust and confidence.
- Growth Design: You design with a focus on user activation and behavior change. You identify friction points and opportunities to convert passive users into active ones through targeted, testable interventions. You’re comfortable designing scrappy, iterative experiments that drive measurable impact, and you prioritize speed, clarity, and continuous learning over polish. You know how to uncover small UX levers that unlock big user actions.
- Collaboration & Influence: You successfully influence, even without direct authority, by building trust and credibility. You help build a culture of collaboration by proactively initiating larger, inclusive, cross-team, global conversations about key aspects of your work. You bring others along as you create your vision or execute your strategy, inspiring them to contribute and offer input, leading to systemic buy-in.
- Experimental Mindset: You thrive in 0 to 1 environments where the path forward is uncertain. You’re energized by experimentation and are constantly generating and testing new ideas to unlock growth. You design to learn—rapidly prototyping, shipping MVPs, and using data and user feedback to drive iteration. You balance creativity with a deep curiosity, and you pivot when the data tells a new story.
- Leadership & People Management: You inspire and motivate the people around you to deliver positive impacts for the business. You are courageously candid and comfortable giving and receiving feedback up, down and across an organization. You build and grow high-performing teams, maximizing their potential. You encourage your team to be ambitious in their pursuit of change, and you value openness. You are a role model for values-based behaviors.
Target experience
- 8+ years of product/UX design experience, ideally with a focus on B2C products
- 1 to 2+ years of experience managing product designers
- Significant experience developing and iterating new features that drive user conversion and activation
- Experience designing and optimizing new product features that build off core user values
- Experience building experiences that guide users through emotional journeys (healthcare, fintech, civic tech, etc.)
