About This Role

Leading and taking full accountability in the successful creation, ownership, and execution of US Medical Affairs (USMA) operational processes and activities, the Sr Manager, Medical Affairs Operations Lead (specialty Care) is a critical member of the US Medical Affairs team. Focusing mainly within the Specialty Care therapeutic area, your scope of responsibility encompasses a wide range of activities, for example: managing medical initiatives, budget and finance support, execution for operational activities, field coordination support, and external engagement planning and management. You will be empowered to identify opportunities for process improvements and lead operational excellence efforts. Collaboration with cross-functional teams will be instrumental as you work to streamline and optimize operational processes. Furthermore, your commitment to fostering a culture of agility and continuous improvement, both in your personal capabilities and the processes under your purview, will be key to your success in this role. You will report up through the North America Medical Strategy, Operations, and Excellence function, ensuring alignment with our overarching medical strategy and excellence initiatives. 

What You’ll Do

  • Accountable for Critical Specialty Care Operation Execution: Lead and oversee the execution of critical medical operations processes across the Specialty Care portfolio. Autonomously prioritize and execute the operational needs for the medical field team and medical directors’ office, covering a broad spectrum of activities such as facilitating regular team meetings, leading continuous team updates within Smartsheet, acting as a Smartsheet "super user," supporting, contracting, and planning for external engagements, field coordination support, grant application reviews and processing, internal document management and auditing, managing medical initiatives, and more. Drive a culture of agility and continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with the Specialty Care leadership team, and finance to ensure teams are on track with their budget. Identifying and escalating risks and ensuring accruals and budgets are up to date each month.
  • Stakeholder Management and Communication: Collaborate with internal teams, such as other therapeutic areas and functions in Medical, Compliance, and Legal, to ensure seamless operational processes. Engage with external stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, vendors, and partners, to facilitate operational activities and maintain strong professional relationships.
  • Process Improvement Initiatives: Identify and implement process improvement opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness. Lead or participate in cross-functional teams to drive operational excellence initiatives.
  • Performance Metrics and Reporting: Develop and maintain performance metrics to monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of operational processes. Provide regular reports and updates to senior management on the status of operational activities and process improvements.
  • General Strategy, Operations, and Excellence Support: Cross-train in other areas across the organization and lead initiatives to support the broader US or North American medical team in areas such as field systems (Veeva), medical research, vendor management, communication portals, project management, and other areas of need.

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required (advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in medical affairs, operations, vendor, or contract management, research operations, budget management, or related fields required. 
  • A track record of exhibiting self-motivation, agility, and a continuous improvement mindset is critical to this role’s success.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and overseeing the execution of critical operational systems (preferred experience with executing Medical or Biotech operations) required.
  • At least some project / program management experience required, and must have strong organizational, timeline management, and leadership skills.
  • Working with, maintaining, and /or creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidance documentation with experience in training for such documents required.

Preferred Skills

  • Advanced Scientific or Clinical degree; Doctoral (MBA, MS, PhD, PharmD) level preferred.
  • Experience with Smartsheet is strongly preferred
  • Strong business acumen with finance experience or training, especially with budget management preferred.
  • Previous medical affairs experience strongly preferred, especially with field systems (e.g. Veeva), as an MSL, and/ or in medical operations.
  • Excellent command of computer skills (Excel, Outlook, Word, Power Point, Smartsheet etc.).

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is $122,000 - $197,000. Base salary is determined by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, job related years of relevant experience, internal equity, and location of the job. Additionally, this role is eligible for participation in Biogen’s LTI grants and other incentive programs.
