What you will be doing in the role of a Sr. Coordinator, Congressional Policy & Advocacy

Empowered by our expansive grassroots network, Susan G. Komen’s Center for Public Policy is leading the fight for those impacted by breast cancer locally, in our states, and federally in Washington, D.C. The Center for Public Policy works to identify, through a transparent and broad-based, intensive vetting and selection process, the policy issues that have the greatest potential impact on Komen’s mission.  

The Sr. Coordinator, Congressional Policy & Advocacy will support and promote Komen’s public policy and advocacy initiatives related to breast cancer and public health policy within the U.S. Congress. This individual will assist in building relationships with federal legislators and their staff; monitors the federal budget climate for impacts on breast health programs and research and provides reports; coordinates and provides robust administrative and project management support of congressional advocacy efforts held in our Nation’s capital.  

 What you will bring to the table

  • Assists in the development and implementation of federal policy strategy.
  • Researches and tracks current and emerging federal issues, budgets, programs, and legislation that affect Komen, its constituents, and the cancer community.
  • Assists in developing messaging and resource materials for priority policy issues (e.g. toolkits, talking points, fact sheets, letters, action alerts).
  • Provides robust administrative and project management support for Komen’s Center for Public Policy efforts within the U.S. Congress.
  • Assists in coordinating relationships with members of Congress and their staff, to establish open two-way communications that advance Komen’s goals, and maintains relationship database.
  • Frequently represents Komen at various meetings throughout the DMV and serves as liaison with assigned external partners, preparing reports to ensure leadership, consultants, and other Komen staff are kept informed.
  • Identifies strategic partnership opportunities including Member and/or staff connections to cancer — either personal or family connections or relevant concerns in their districts (e.g., cancer hospitals, uninsured rates, disparities).
  • Identifies opportunities to build relationships with the Congressional Black Caucus, Hispanic Caucus, Asian Pacific Islander Caucus, Cancer Caucus/Cancer Coalition, etc.
  • Identifies, attends and reports back on relevant committee and commission hearings.
  • Coordinate with Public Policy & Advocacy team to schedule, prepare for, and execute Komen’s annual Advocacy Summit, legislative briefings, in-district meetings, and site visits.
  • Prepares production schedules to execute legislative strategy by ensuring tasks are assigned, milestones are reached, and deadlines are met.
  • Prepares event documents, reports and presentations using advanced PowerPoint and word processing skills.
  • Assists with federal lobbying compliance reporting.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 We know you will have and be able to

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Government Affairs and 1-3 years’ experience with a similar nonprofit working in federal policy.
  • Experience working with members of the U.S. House of Representatives and/or Senate.
  • Knowledge about the legislative process.
  • Strong written communication, verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required for effective interaction with policymakers, volunteers and other high-profile persons.
  • Ability to synthesize complex policy concepts and communicate these concepts to non-experts.
  • Excellent program management abilities including strong planning, execution and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic policy landscape.
  • High-level proficiency with MS Office products.

  • Approximate hourly rate $18.97 to $23.08, exact compensation ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job level, internal equity and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate's skills, experience and geographic location.

Komen provides a remote and/or home-based working environment for all active employees. Komen defines remote as the ability to work from any physical location within the U.S. where an employee can perform specified work duties without disruption or distraction.  Komen defines home-based roles as positions that are required to reside in a specific market. Work schedules for both remote and home based are determined by the organizational needs of each department.
