Compensation

$170,000 - $175,000 per year. You are eligible for a Short-Term Incentive Plan with the target at 20% of your annual earnings; terms and conditions apply.

Sr. Compliance Counsel - Remote

Reporting directly to the Chief Compliance Officer, the Sr. Compliance Counsel is a seasoned compliance professional and key member of the legal/compliance team. The Sr. Compliance Counsel is responsible for advising on a wide variety of complex healthcare compliance matters, designing and conducting risk assessments and audits, developing compliance policies and training, and investigating and addressing potential compliance issues. This is a fully remote role that can be performed anywhere in the United States.

Essential Functions

As part of the compliance team, the role has the following responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice on (1) healthcare laws and regulations, including HIPAA, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, EKRA, False Claims Act, and state-specific regulations, and (2) all aspects of the healthcare revenue cycle, including compliance with payor agreements / medical policies and proper billing practices.
  • Review and approve sales and marketing materials, especially those pertaining to interactions with healthcare providers and patient billing.
  • Regularly review and update compliance policies to reflect changes in laws and/or the company’s operations.
  • Design and lead compliance training initiatives for employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Design and perform risk assessments and compliance audits to ensure the effective operation of the company’s compliance program.
  • Conduct internal investigations related to potential compliance violations, and advise on how to address the findings thereof.
  • In partnership with Patient Financial Services, manage payor audits and repayment requests.
  • Closely collaborate with cross-departmental stakeholders (e.g., sales, marketing, managed care, quality, finance, patient financial services, and executive leadership) to promote the effective operation of the company’s compliance program.
  • Special projects assigned by the Chief Compliance Officer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience providing legal advice regarding healthcare compliance, including the responsibilities described in the “Key Responsibilities” section above.
  • Experience as an organization’s sole healthcare compliance attorney strongly preferred.
  • Experience in the laboratory sector is strongly preferred.

Preferred

  • Law degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in good standing in the State of California or any other jurisdiction (admission to State Bar of California or eligibility under the Registered In-House Counsel provisions of the State Bar of California strongly preferred).

Work Requirements

  • Limited travel required as needed (<15%).

Must have the ability to effectively work with others remotely, manage a schedule across multiple time zones, and provide business-focused advice as a trusted partner.

  • Ability to work remotely, be self-organized, and self-manage the workload and schedule.
  • Strong decision-making, project management, and organizational skills.

  • Proven ability to perform the responsibilities described in the “Essential Functions” section above.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills with the ability to interface, and develop relationships, with all levels of management and staff, and work cross-culturally.
  • Highly motivated and proactive, with the ability to articulate company vision and policy, and to seek out areas of risk and priority.
  • Ability to consistently apply good judgment and prioritize.
  • Adapts nimbly to changing needs within the business.

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
