This portfolio management role is a key member of our Portfolio/Product Management team, optimizing analytical support for the Commercial Middle Market Field organization.  

Advanced Excel and Power BI / Tableau skills are a required for consideration, while coding ability in different languages and applications is preferred (Databricks, Dataiku, SQL, R/Python).  Prior experience within the Insurance and/or Financial Services industry is strongly preferred.  

Compensation Grade: E3

Job Description Summary

As a Senior Analyst, you'll provide detailed data analysis in support of our Product Management team. This includes data extraction and formulating solutions to complex business issues. Working with moderate supervision, as a member of a cross functional team, you'll impact projects, systems, workflows and processes. We will count on you to provide detailed portfolio analysis and find opportunities at the region, state, territory and agency levels.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Gathers information from multiple sources to perform analysis. May require gathering verbal information from internal subject matter authorities or partners and data through reports or other external published or non-published electronic means. Provides and applies context and understanding of information to anticipate the multiple variables and complexities needed to research.

  • Analyzes data from various business processes. Works independently, identifying multiple inputs, variables and using business knowledge to fully consider the situation and provide a robust analysis and deployment recommendation. Applies judgement, understanding, and curiosity to data to develop effective recommendations.

  • Manages completion of analysis and tasks within assigned areas within established time and service standards. May manage timelines and coordinate completion of project work through others.

  • Determines necessary steps to process work. Defines data sets, data sources and assumptions to complete the analysis. Determines most appropriate format to display data, options and recommendations based on the situation. Provides input on the rate review process for assigned products and on external factors not easily seen in the data. Makes recommendations based on acquired functional and regional knowledge.

  • Plans completion of assignments to meet agreed upon timelines and service level agreements. May plan work that coordinates with a larger team effort.

  • Proactively consults with team and internal partners to resolve business issues and projects of moderate complexity, requiring more discernment or robust solutions. Gains insight into organizational capabilities and opportunities in order to drive maximum value. Identifies gaps, trends and opportunities for profitable growth for consultation with portfolio team and other internal partners. Consults with leader and product manager regarding outcomes of analysis work and ideas.

  • Communicates with business partners by requesting or providing requested information. May assist in delivering strategic and technical information to peers, leaders and internal partners. May communicate and present outcome of projects within team and across the department, region and company.

  • Builds and strengthens relationships with peers partners to support completion of ongoing assignments.

  • Participates in training classes, department and company meetings. Pursues additional education to increase personal, professional and technical knowledge and skills.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Product Director/Manager. No direct or indirect reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in insurance, actuarial science, mathematics, risk management, economics, finance, accounting, business administration or related field preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward CPCU, AU CIC, INS ARM, Actuarial exams or similar designations preferred.

Experience: Three years of experience in property and casualty insurance or related area and experience with data analysis preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of analytical tools, basic knowledge of core business functions, underwriting practices, performance measurement techniques, and systems required. Basic knowledge of related pricing, marketing, company operations and products. Strong business software solutions skills utilizing the Microsoft office suite. Ability to analyze data, identify underlying issues, devise alternative solutions, select most appropriate action and follow through to completion. Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with internal and external contacts. Ability to organize and present detailed analysis, information and concepts. Ability to prioritize own work/time.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.

The national salary range for Sr Analyst, Portfolio Management - P&C : $54,000.00-$111,500.00

The expected starting salary range for Sr Analyst, Portfolio Management - P&C : $60,000.00 - $90,000.00
