Specialist, Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS)

As a member of the Site Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team, work collaboratively to ensure that compliant EHS programs are developed and implemented within operating departments at the Rahway site.

Integrates EHS programs into daily operations to assure regulatory compliance, continuous improvement and performance objectives are met around EHS. Partners with key stakeholders in research (labs and pilot plants), clinical manufacturing, office, and facility support functions to develop EHS priorities to achieve goals in alignment with site business priorities. Performs responsibilities and addresses challenges with limited supervision.

Primary Responsibilities:

With a knowledge of environmental, health and safety regulations and their applicability, supports R&D customer business areas via the following:

  • Supports Industrial Hygiene Program implementation for laboratories, pilot plants, clinical manufacturing, office environments and facility related support.

  • Supports biosafety program implementation for laboratories, pilot plants, clinical manufacturing, office environments and facility related support.

  • Anticipates, recognizes, and evaluates workplace health hazards (chemicals, including potent compounds, biological, noise, ergonomics, IAQ) and recommends proper control strategies to manage identified risks. 

  • Completes industrial hygiene and biosafety hazard assessments, ergonomic evaluations, and incident investigations.

  • Completes industrial hygiene monitoring and associated report writing to include a prioritization of Industrial Hygiene (IH)-related risks and develops and assists with implementing corrective and preventive action plans.

  • Reviews processes, facilities, procedures and management of change documents to assure conformance to recognized EHS regulations, standards and guidelines. 

  • Provides support to client groups in completing injury/illness analysis, training, self-assessments and addressing specific EHS concerns as they are raised.

  • Develops EHS procedures, guidelines and training programs as assigned.

  • Monitors key safety performance indicators and visibly participate in promoting EHS policies and initiatives.

  • Provides support to client groups in completing incident and near miss analysis, training, self-assessments and addressing specific EHS concerns as they are raised.

  • Supports above site teams to solve company wide IH and biosafety challenges where needed. 

Position Qualifications:

Education Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in industrial hygiene, safety, chemistry, biology or chemical engineering field is preferred.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 1+ years of work experience in industrial hygiene in pharmaceutical, bio-pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry.

  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, sampling methods, mathematical skills critical thinking, problem solving and project management.

  • Excellent communication skills, people skills, and proficient organizational skills.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Relevant professional certification(s) preferred including P.E., CSP and/or CIH.

  •  Experience conducting ergonomic assessments and implementing ergonomic solutions.
