The Practicum Instructor is a professional licensed social worker with an MSW degree who serves as a teacher, trainer, professional mentor, and role model for the MSW Intern student working under the direction of the Associate Director of Case Management (ADCM).MSW interns are supervised by Practicum Instructors designated by the ADCM and the partnering University. Practicum Instructors are committed to teaching and upholding The National Association of Social Workers (NASW). The Practicum is a required course that the Social Worker Intern is enrolled at their University or College, and must pass to graduate.
The purpose of Practicum Instructor during internship is to assist students with the integration and application of knowledge learned in their academic courses and to engage the student in a critical analysis of their experience in their internship. In addition, the Practicum Instructor’s responsibility is to help the students develop the skills necessary to demonstrate the 9 Core Competencies identified by the Council on Social Work Education.
The Practicum Instructor and the ADCM need to maintain close contact and communication with one another and present a united front in dealing with procedural issues related to the internship.
As Practicum Instructor in the Division of Student Life, the Social Worker Supervisor/ Practicum Instructor collaborates and cooperates to create leadership and intercultural competence opportunities to support student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. The mission of Student Life is to fully support holistic student development within a social justice framework centered in preparing students to be caring, socially responsible citizens in our global and local community.
Full Job Description:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. In working with the MSW students, The Practicum Instructor provides:
a. Weekly supervision based on the student’s learning objectives
● Bi-weekly individual supervision for each student (some circumstances may require individual weekly supervision)
● Bi-weekly group supervision for all students
b. Weekly review of the Reflective Learning Tools (RLT)
c. Clarify student’s roles and goals relative to the Practicum placement experience
d. Assessment of the student’s progress
2. At the agency/placement, the Practicum Instructor provides
a. Collegial support to the ADCM
b. Clarification of the professional social work learning objectives
3. In consultation with the ADCM, The Practicum Instructor:
a. Helps the student develop their learning objectives
b. Provides ongoing evaluation of the student’s educational progress in the internship
c. Completes the mid-year and final evaluation.
d. Participate with the intern in completing the Learning Agreement and the Mid-Year and Final Progress.
Hold a License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW) in the state of California
An MSW degree from an accredited School of Social Work
At least two years of post-licensure LCSW work experience
If required by the partnering University, a completion certificate for a new *Practicum Instruction class from the University that the Social Worker Intern is attending.
○ For USC or any Southern California CSWE accredited School of Social Work consortium partners, plan to attend the new Practicum Instructors Training at USC or any Southern California CSWE accredited consortium partners. USC offers a hybrid (combination of on-ground & online) course, while the VAC provides an online course with synchronous and asynchronous sessions.
In addition, Practicum Instructors must meet the criteria required to teach and support MSW interns in Practicum placement. They must also be committed to meeting all documentation, supervision, and evaluation requirements of the program, particularly the ability to assess student progress based on the most current Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) identified by the Council on Social Work Education in the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS).
