Social Media Manager

Role Summary
The Social Media Manager is a member of our MarComms team. In alignment with our organization's goals, you will lead the creation and execution of a comprehensive social media strategy designed to engage our global audiences, actively build communities, and amplify the PLOS mission across the evolving social media landscape. You will manage PLOS’ brand and reputation across social media and provide a consistent voice and persona aligned with our brand across all channels. You will build social engagement strategies to drive growth aligned with our organizational goals and take a data-driven analytic approach that drives growth in our performance and engagement. You will also ensure that best practice is adhered to across all our channels and by all PLOS employees.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a global social media strategy for PLOS across all existing and emerging social media platforms.
- Own and amplify the PLOS brand voice across all social channels reflecting the PLOS open science mission across the scholarly communications landscape, and beyond.
- Define robust community engagement and content strategies in support of organizational priorities and objectives. Drive the creation of content that helps support PLOS’ mission, reputation and brand.
- Collaborate with Marketing, Editorial, Sales, Research Ethics and Open Research teams, among others to ensure alignment on all campaigns, including organic and paid social strategies.
- In collaboration with MarComms colleagues, build reporting and measurement framework across all social media activity (via data & analytics) to drive growth strategies aligned with organizational objectives.
- Use social listening tools to conduct sentiment analysis and define trends across all PLOS social media activity.
- Actively explore new opportunities for social engagement in specific regional and cultural contexts.
- Manage PLOS’ social media channels, BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, LinkedIn activities and YouTube channels. Secure necessary content approvals and publish/schedule using social content management system. Provide oversight on marketing campaign social strategies.
- Collaborate on reputation management issues across the organization and provide real-time monitoring and reporting on reputational concerns or issues.
- Stay well-versed in emerging trends in social media, new media, and technology. Conduct research on new and potentially useful platforms and make informed recommendations on their potential value to PLOS to meet organizational objectives.
- Assist in strategy development and real-time monitoring for specific projects and launch initiatives.
Knowledge and Skills
- Superior project management skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to manage complex, high impact projects.
- Strong collaboration skills. Maturity and tact.
- Excellent communication skills under time pressure; ability to partner, influence and collaborate to create strong relationships, gain commitment and accomplish shared goals.
- Experience with social media tools for publishing, monitoring and listening.
- Exceptional writer and storyteller, with experience in writing for traditional, online and social media. In-depth understanding of target audiences, expertise in high-impact messaging to broad audiences.
- Solid understanding and familiarity with new and emerging communications tools and digital channels.
- Experience in developing and executing strategic communications plans and correlating metrics, utilizing both media relations and social media tactics.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications or strategic communications preferred
- Relevant working experience in the publishing industry or related field; science background a major plus.
- An accomplished social media professional with broad experience within publishing or a science-related environment, with an avid interest in and demonstrated knowledge of social media, including strategy, content development and community management.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Prolonged periods stationary at a desk and working on a computer
- Some national and international travel will be required
- Some flexibility to work across time zones
The base salary range we’ve established for these positions is (US): $85,000-$115,000. PLOS also offers a comprehensive benefits package summarized below.
