Senior Scientist – Biologics Analytical Research and Development – Automation (Onsite)

Job Description

The Biologics Analytical Research & Development department of our Research Laboratory Division is seeking applicants for a Senior Scientist position available at its Rahway, New Jersey research facility. The Senior Scientist is a laboratory-based scientific role tasked with identifying, developing and deploying automation and high-throughput tools and techniques to drive efficiency in the development of Biologics drug substances and drug products. The successful candidate must function well and be able to collaborate in a fast-paced, integrated and multidisciplinary team environment. The qualified candidate will be responsible for development, qualification, implementation, troubleshooting and transfer of automated analytical methods for monoclonal antibodies or other complex therapeutic proteins. Applicants must have effective organizational, multi-tasking, oral/written communications skills, show scientific leadership, and a desire to conduct research and share with external community. Experience leading small groups of technical personnel or analytical projects will aid in distinguishing candidates. Evidence of strong cross-functional collaboration in an academic or industrial setting is also preferred. 

Education Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in analytical chemistry/biochemistry or related field or M.S. with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry or B.S. with a minimum of 8 years of experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry. 

Required Experience and Skills: 

  • Experience using benchtop or high-throughput automation platforms for parallel experimentation

  • Experience in separations science (e.g., SEC, RP, IEX), Molecular biology (PCR, DNA extraction) or immunoassay (ELISA, gel electrophoresis) techniques

  • Demonstrated ability for initiative, creativity and innovation in problem solving

  • A strong team player with excellent oral and written and communication skills with the ability to work independently to develop and design experiments, critically evaluate data, and then iterate as part of the scientific method

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Programming of automation platforms (Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman Coulter, Unchained Labs, Chemspeed, etc) and designing high-throughput workflows for parallel experimentation

  • Computer programming experience (e.g. Visual Basic, Python)

  • Background in Analytical Methodologies and sound scientific understanding of Critical Quality Attributes/QbD/DOE principles as well as data analysis and statistics

  • Experience with qualification, validation, and transfer of assays to a GLP or regulated laboratory environment

  • Experience in analysis of various Biologic modalities (e.g., mAb, antibody-drug conjugate, fusion protein, etc.)
