INTRO TO POSITION

The Senior Producer, Podcast Subscriptions will play a key role in producing outstanding content that drives audience revenue to NPR and its Member stations, delights paying audiences, and persuades non-supporters to join.

The Senior Producer will work closely with NPR and partner podcasts to pilot and do ongoing production work for the NPR+ subscription and Membership program. The Senior Producer will have experience working on many different show types (format, length, genre etc.) and an ability to quickly adapt their work style and editorial perspective to each show they work with. They will use their own ideas and experience to inform content decisions, as well as be guided by data from subscribers, potential subscribers, and direct listener feedback. They will work directly with podcasts to seek new opportunities to add subscriber benefits where possible. They will expertly manage showrunner and fellow producer expectations throughout the production process, whether for regular episodes or special projects.

The Senior Producer, Podcast Subscriptions will have a solid understanding of the podcasting industry and subscription landscape. In addition to their editorial skills, this person will be a strategic thinker with an interest in and knowledge of competitor trends.

This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.

This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.    

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead efforts to expand subscription offerings beyond sponsorship-free episodes, in ways that engage NPR podcast fans and respect our mission as a non-profit organization. Benefits are expected to include audio, but may range into other forms of audience engagement.
  • Work closely with various show teams to pilot, produce, and refine subscriber-only offering.
  • Work closely with Marketing and Development on initiatives to encourage direct subscription support.
  • Use audience insights, subscriber behavior, and editorial strategy to keep the supporter offering attractive and effective.
  • Write and produce promos that highlight subscriber-only benefits.
  • Support additional opportunities to super-serve supporters based on individual shows’ plans and interests, such as through non-audio benefits like events and more.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 8 or more years experience in audio production.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with individuals and teams from different show types, formats, genres, and more.
  • Experience working with editorial teams to create content as producer, editor or reporter.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information diplomatically.
  • Ability to thrive in a highly matrixed environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to use business priorities and audience feedback to focus editorial efforts.
  • Self-motivated and able to manage multiple work streams at the same time without missing deadlines.
  • Proven ability to consistently work as part of a team, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
  • Ability to cultivate and support diversity as well as an inclusive and equitable workplace culture.
  • Ability to juggle multiple complex tasks.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience within podcasting
  • Experience with video production
  • Experience with audience engagement work

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience is required.

WORK LOCATION

  • Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.

JOB TYPE

  • This is a full time, exempt position.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $122,500 - $155,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR’s benefits options.
