Compensation

Compensation includes a base salary of $102,600.00 - $154,000.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.

Job Description

The AJC’s mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news and information for the people of Atlanta, of Georgia and the South. To achieve that mission, we are in the process of transforming ourselves from a storied daily newspaper into a modern media company.   

 

THE JOB: 

The Senior Producer of Development will help lead much of the initiative at AJC Studios including the translation of intellectual property (IP) into compelling journalism-focused documentaries, TV series, films, podcasts, and digital content. This role will also contribute to ideation, creative development and talent development across content mediums and platforms at the AJC. This role demands a deep understanding of journalistic storytelling, documentary filmmaking, scripted and unscripted content, and a cross-platform content strategy.  

 

The ideal candidate is a voracious consumer of news and video content in its many forms. Strong editorial judgment and a knowledge of the digital, documentary and filmmaking landscape is required.  

 

To be successful, this candidate must be a creative thinker and possess strong writing and project management skills. They must understand the significance of the AJC throughout Atlanta, Georgia and the South, and find strategic ways to greenlight projects that continue to broaden the brand’s reach.   

 

The Senior Producer, Development will report to the Head of Video and will say aligned on an overall content and newsroom strategy in an effort to oversee forward motion and feedback on projects in development.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Research, write, pitch, and sell new ideas from the AJC’s historical archive and from ongoing or new reporting. Identify best access points culled from our journalism, relationships, and positionality.  

  • Function as the daily contact and liaison for all development work. This includes handling communications with external partners, setting meetings, drafting written feedback, and strategizing on next steps with internal stakeholders and AJC representatives.  

  • Build and maintain relationships that benefit unscripted and scripted development projects, including but not limited to journalists, production companies, producers, filmmakers, agents and talent representatives. This includes finding networking opportunities through general meetings/outreach and attending key panels & festivals when appropriate.  

  • Work with legal and leadership to streamline contracts and deals relating to optioned IP.  

  • Work cross functionally to align with overall newsroom and content strategy, overseeing forward motion and feedback on projects in development.   

  • Work closely with partners and across all co-productions to ensure the AJC imprint and brand is represented and adheres to AJC’s journalistic ethics and standards.  

  • Coordinate with marketing, PR, and distribution teams to optimize the reach and impact of project releases, ensuring content resonates with new audiences and is accessible and engaging across all platforms. 

  • Integrate with sales to understand future client needs and facilitate sponsored or branded content storytelling efforts to build out AJC’s presence and identity within the marketplace. Pitch “built-if-sold” concepts for development for AJC digital video and audio teams.  

  • Work closely with the AJC digital video and newsroom editors to best understand how digital-first content bolsters IP development through projects which could later be optioned in development deals.  

  • Find opportunities and pitch ideas for a revamped podcast slate. This includes both internally produced podcast productions that support AJC’s content initiatives as well as co-produced or externally produced podcast and audio projects.  

  • Assist in marketplace research to determine future steps for audio development, digital video development, and continuing efforts across AJC Studios.  

  • Identify key contributors to amplify the work across all internal content departments and develop talent and/or SOWs accordingly.  

  • Develop and/or oversee special projects that ladder up into one-off initiatives or efforts spearheaded by the AJC. These efforts include video and audio production and/or project management, serving as the cross functional liaison across content teams. (ie: The AJC Peachtree Road Race).  

  • Aid in creative production and post-production processes, as needed. 

  • Assist the Head of Video with admin tasks associated with development, freelance engagement, and content production. 

  • Maintain organizational grids, documents, and timelines and provide meeting agendas and regular updates to stakeholders.  

 

Qualifications 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a proven track record of collaboration with team members and talent  

  • Excellent writing skills  

  • Ability to manage large projects and work collaboratively to tell a story  

  • A passion and excitement for premium content creation and storytelling   

  • Capability of bringing powerful stories to life across multiple media formats. 

  • A commitment to journalistically sound practices in all stages of production and publication 

  • Proven ability to work closely with standards and legal groups to ensure all projects meet AJC editorial guidelines and practices 

  • Self-motivated, well-organized and eager to find creative solutions to challenging problems 

  • An ability to remain flexible in changing environments  

  • Must be able to work an extended schedule as deadlines and news cycle require 

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.  

  • With a BA/BS, must have 6+ years of production and development experience. Candidates may have a Master’s degree have at least 4 years of experience or a Ph.D. with at least 1 year of experience, while without a degree must have a minimum of 10 years of experience in digital video production.
