The HowlRound Senior Editor is instrumental in HowlRound’s digital publishing operations. The Senior Editor evaluates content submissions and commissions for HowlRound in collaboration with the HowlRound team, works with HowlRound contributors on content revisions to Journal pieces, and takes the lead on related editorial tasks. The HowlRound Senior Editor is charged with editing (structural, stylistic, and copy), fact-checking, and proofing copy according to the Chicago Manual of Style and established HowlRound editorial style guidelines, as well as to engage in deeper values-driven conversations with contributors and team members.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Usher accepted Journal articles through the editing process, including editing content for grammar, style, and structure; work closely with contributors to ensure their ideas are shared clearly and that their voices are fully represented; communicate iterative feedback to help shape the pieces to fit HowlRound's editorial frame; and ready final drafts for publication;
  • Deliver multiple pieces of publication ready digital content for HowlRound.com per week, ensuring that three to five essays, one to two podcasts, and a variable number of HowlRound TV announcements are readied for publication;
  • Facilitate a weekly HowlRound team editorial meeting, including evaluating content submissions;
  • Lead weekly small group editorial check-in meetings to set the publishing calendar for the week and troubleshoot issues as needed;
  • Maintain and manage an up-to-date Editorial calendar in Basecamp;
  • Communicate nuanced and complex feedback—including HowlRound’s editorial standards and requirements—to potential contributors;
  • Edit podcast transcripts for style and accuracy;
  • Edit HowlRound TV announcements, static pages on HowlRound.com, and other communications for style, grammar, and clarity as assigned;
  • Edit other HowlRound written materials as assigned, including but not limited to books, grant applications and reports, press releases, social media content;
  • Actively participate in conversations evaluating and supporting the evolution of digital publishing practice and processes, in alignment with HowlRound’s values;
  • Review essays upon publication to correct any errors that were introduced while publishing;
  • Represent HowlRound at conferences and events as needed;
  • Support and document HowlRound in-person programming (convenings and other events) as needed;
  • Attend regular check-ins with supervisor and full HowlRound team check-ins;
  • Participate in Office of the Arts staff-wide initiatives, including but not limited to staff retreats, staff meetings, and racial and climate justice initiatives;
  • Other duties as assigned.
     

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform job.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theater, English or Journalism or 6 years’ applicable experience required
  • 3-5 years of professional editing experience, including experience editing to a style guide required
  • Project management experience required

  • Knowledge and understanding of HowlRound’s place in the theatre landscape
  • Experience in crafting and providing iterative feedback for written content in collaboration with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience working one on one with artists
  • Expertise with Google Suite, Zoom, Basecamp or similar project management software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate and effectively interact with people across cultures, ability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and race

  • Knowledge of the contemporary US nonprofit theatre landscape

Compensation: $57,250.00 - $70,200.00 annually, commensurate with experience.

Grade of Position: 23-07E
