Summary

Save the Children Action Network (“SCAN”) – a 501(c)(4) organization – is the political advocacy arm of Save the Children. We are building bipartisan support to make sure every child has a strong start in life. We’re doing this by advocating for high-quality early learning and ending child hunger in the U.S., the safety of children arriving at the southern U.S. border and educating and protecting kids around the world.

SCAN is seeking a Senior Director, State & Electoral Campaigns, Eastern Region to develop the strategy and lead a team to achieve state legislative, federal advocacy and electoral goals in the Eastern region of the country on priority campaigns. The campaigns will be centered on expanding early childhood education and food security domestically and ensuring children thrive globally. The Senior Director will supervise campaigns from development through implementation and evaluation. In support of state legislative, advocacy and electoral priorities, the Senior Director will ensure the recruitment and ongoing engagement of our supporters, including student advocates, volunteers and volunteer leaders. They will manage a multi-state budget and oversee planning for their region quarterly and by election cycles.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

Lead development of advocacy and electoral infrastructure in New Hampshire, Virginia, South Carolina, and Louisiana. (50%)

  • Drive SCAN’s legislative agendas in each state.
  • Identify opportunities for state and local electoral engagement in each state.
  • In partnership with the Senior Managing Director, State & Electoral Campaigns, develop strategy to secure electoral wins.
  • Work with state staff to develop and maintain coalition and donor relationships in New Hampshire, Virginia, South Carolina, and Louisiana.
  • Ensure the team tracks and reports on legislative affairs and activities.
  • Oversee lobbying compliance for the region.

Lead strategy for recruitment and engagement of supporters, student advocacy, volunteers and volunteer leaders in New Hampshire, Virginia, South Carolina, and Louisiana. (25%)

  • Design and lead state staff in executing their Volunteer Leader, Student Ambassador, and Family Engagement programs, working collaboratively with the Volunteer Leader and Training, Student Engagement, and Family Engagement teams to build SCAN infrastructure in targeted communities, college and high school campuses, with parents.
  • Work with internal constituency building teams to ensure constituency-related grant deliverables are met.
  • Work with staff to build supporter list via outreach and community events.
  • Lead and plan aspects of the national Save the Children and Save the Children Action Network Advocacy Summit and State or Regional convenings (e.g. summits, lobby days, etc.).

Manage a dynamic team of staff across Eastern target states (25%)

  • Train, develop, coach, lead, and supervise staff, clearly communicating organization, division and department priorities, and how their work contributes to our mission, ensuring that the working environment continually fosters diversity, inclusion, and belonging – supporting Save the Children Action Network values.
  • Provide regular feedback on performance and address any issues.
  • Manage data collection and internal systems for impact reporting; train staff on data collection processes and systems.
  • Provide training and necessary tools to staff to achieve their goals; ascertain needs and arrange for the correct courses, trainings, etc. to address those needs.
  • Manage a multi-state budget and oversee planning quarterly and by election cycles.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor Degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 7 years of relevant experience
  • Experience managing staff, with a preference for remote management experience.
  • Proven experience and knowledge in working with data systems for volunteer tracking.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing integrated online-offline organizing, field-based events and grassroots recruitment for advocacy campaigns.
  • A strong understanding of state government operations and the legislative process.
  • Experience working on state or local legislative and/or electoral campaigns.
  • Strong public speaking and training experience.
  • Highly professional, motivated, energetic, and well organized.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize several ongoing projects.
  • Ability to travel frequently to priority districts, and additional travel to meet campaign-specific needs when required.
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining and environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in campus and youth outreach and engagement campaigns.
  • Experience working with impacted communities and centering their experience in campaigns

 

Compensation

Save the Children Action Network pays the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate location:

  • Geo 1 - NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $108,800 – $121,600 base salary
  • Geo 2 - Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $98,600 – $110,200 base salary
  • Geo 3 - Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $88,400 – $98,800 base salary

The salary ranges listed above are for US based candidates. For candidates located outside of the US, salary ranges will be based on the salary scales of the local employer of record.

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location (more information on job structure is available here). Employee may be eligible for an incentive program.
