Our Company's Discovery Biologics is seeking an exceptional and experienced scientist to lead the South San Francisco Protein Engineering group. The Senior Director, Protein Engineering carries responsibilities for protein design and engineering of our broad portfolio of biologics modalities, including the development/advancement, establishment of best practices, execution, deployment, and cross-training of structure-based, sequence-based, and AI/ML guided methods. The role leads an organization of both in silico and wet lab scientists, the latter to progress and inform exploratory design concepts. The position reports into the VP of Discovery Biologics and sits on the global Discovery Biologics Leadership Team

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the SSF Protein Engineering team to drive performance and deliver impact on projects and capabilities that accelerate our ability to invent biologics medicines.
  • Advance and maintain state-of-the-art capabilities in protein design and engineering, including structure-based, sequence-based, and AI/ML guided methods.
  • Manage priorities, resources, and investments aligned with the Discovery Biologics strategy.
  • Actively attract and develop talent, including strategically leveraging diversity to strengthen the team.
  • Foster a high-performance culture of collaboration, engagement, self-accountability and inclusion.
  • Effectively partner across multidisciplinary interfaces to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Stay abreast of external advancements in the relevant scientific fields.
  • Promote the external reputation of our Company's Discovery Biologics group.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Ph.D. (with a minimum of 10 years), Bachelor's or Master's (with a minimum of 15 years) in life sciences and relevant industry experience.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Expert-level knowledge in antibody or protein design and engineering (sequence-based, structure-based, AI-based).
  • Deep scientific knowledge across workflows and domains integral to the discovery of protein therapeutics, including antibody discovery, protein expression/purification, protein characterization and developability assessment.
  • Clear evidence of advancing a biotherapeutic programs into the clinic and driving scientific or platform innovations.
  • Demonstrated passion for, and a track record of talent development.
  • Champion for diverse and inclusive culture.
