The University of Maine System is accepting applications for the Senior Director of Total Compensation. The Senior Director of Total Compensation is responsible for designing, developing, and managing the university system’s benefits and compensation programs to ensure market competitiveness, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. This role provides strategic leadership in compensation, benefits, and HR data analytics, supporting a workforce-focused and fiscally responsible approach to total compensation.

In this pivotal role, you will help design and lead a comprehensive, future-focused total compensation strategy that balances competitiveness, cost-effectiveness, and equity. You’ll work closely with HR and finance leaders across our campuses, lead a talented and high-performing team, and play a vital role in labor negotiations, ensuring our compensation programs reflect both our operational priorities and our commitment to our people.

Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, with occasional evenings and weekends. For the right candidate, a hybrid schedule will be considered, working remotely within the state of Maine. 

A typical starting salary for this position is $140,000 to $160,000 and is commensurate with training, education, and experience plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents. The UMS is a recipient of the Wellness Councils of America’s Well Workplace Award and offers a wellness program.

Qualifications:
Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 8-10 years of progressive HR experience, with expertise in total compensation.
  • Proven ability to collaborate, influence stakeholders, and drive large-scale compensation initiatives.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in business administration, human resources, or a related field. 
  • Certifications: SPHR, SHRM-SCP, Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), or Certified Compensation Professional (CCP).
  • Strong expertise in change management, HR data analytics, and process improvement.
