Position Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President, Institutional Giving, the Senior Director, Institutional Giving is a key member of Audubon’s Development Team responsible for building and managing a portfolio of institutional prospects and donors capable of making six- and seven-figure investments in Audubon’s work. The Senior Director also provides management and oversight for Manager, Senior Manager and Director position(s) as relevant. Possible travel up to 25% of time.

  • $145,000-$165,000/year = National

  • $165,000-$180,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY

  • $180,000-$200,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle

Essential Functions

  • Develop, maintain, and grow a personal portfolio of ~30 donors and prospects capable of making $1M+ investments in Audubon programs; aspire to raise at least $3M per year. A typical portfolio for this position will include ~40 funding opportunities pursued per year, at least 20 asks made annually, and personally conducting or participating in at least 24 meetings per year for qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. An important part of this role is the identification of new prospects and strategic management of internal and external relationships to grow funding from new sources.

  • Lead and manage a small team of institutional giving fundraisers primarily based in the Midwest and East Coast.

  • Serve as Development lead for one or more organization strategic priority (ex: Water), geographic region (ex: Atlantic Flyway), and/or supporting pillar (ex: Audubon Americas Program) in addition to soliciting support for programming outside of this leadership area as portfolio requires. Partner with conservation, policy, network and science teams to prioritize funding needs and identify new funding opportunities.

  • Tell the Audubon story in bold and compelling ways—develop big, visionary proposals that stitch together the organization’s work across the country.

  • Shepherd donors through the moves management process—and capitalize on the full range of Audubon assets to do so, involving (and overseeing) senior management, program staff, and volunteers to do so.

  • Develop a strong knowledge of Audubon’s strategic plan and conservation priorities at local, regional, national, and international levels.

  • Stay up to date on current trends in corporate and foundation giving and engage in trainings and professional development opportunities as appropriate.

  • Assist with other departmental projects and related work as assigned by the Vice President.

  • Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required as well as at least 10 years of progressive institutional fundraising experience, at least three years in a leadership position, and a track record of securing six- and seven-figure gifts.

  • Strong writer with proven ability to develop high-level, compelling proposals; ability to quickly synthesize complex ideas and align them with funder priorities.

  • Keen strategist who can effectively engage new and existing donors; outstanding stewardship and relationship management skills (not afraid to ask for money and undeterred from hearing “no”); and a team player with natural affinity for building close, effective working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.

  • Excellent leadership and management skills, including experience coordinating and motivating teams. Experience working in a decentralized, networked organization is a strong plus. Persuasive communicator with excellent presentation and listening skills and can effectively marshal support for ideas. Entrepreneurial self-starter with strong organizational, team leadership, and time-management skills. Highly motivated, energetic, and enthusiastic.

  • Must be good with numbers and comfortable with budgets and financials.

  • Willingness to travel across the country up to 25% of the time.

  • Experience and knowledge of the environmental landscape is a plus, but not required; however, interest in conservation and Audubon is a must.
