Position Overview
Blue Orange is looking for an experienced, capable Database Engineer or DBA to join our talented multi-disciplinary team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for Microsoft SQL Server, T-SQL, and all modern data technologies, and understand how to drive the extraction of business requirements for data transformations, assess data quality, and have great communication skills. This candidate will work with our clients directly to help design, build, scale, and maintain production data validation systems and platforms.
Responsibilities
- Provide in-depth, hands-on Microsoft SQL Server expertise to our client in U.K. hours.
- Provide T-SQL expertise and data engineering support to our client in U.K. hours.
- Analyze and clear processing bottlenecks, slow and/or long-running queries.
- Improve and evolve SQL algorithms – CTEs, window functions, normal form, triggers.
- Operate query and processing.
- Work with the team and stakeholders to define data source, accuracy, and validation requirements.
- Build, maintain, and manage data ingestions, data models, orchestrations, transformations, and validation tests.
- Work with source data systems to extract and prepare data for analytics and testing.
- Work with technical and business teams to evolve the data architecture.
- Work within an Agile environment to constantly deliver value for our clients.
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in a data engineering role, with experience in ETL, data warehousing, data lakes, lakehouses, pipelines, modeling, and data quality validation.
- Expert experience with data ingestion, modeling, and conformance/compliance validation.
- Expert-level skills with SQL, statistical analysis, and data validation.
- Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Ability to interact with others using sound judgment and a steady professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment.
- BA or BS degree in a technical or quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, Statistics).
- Excellent verbal and written English communication.
- Experience in the financial services industry, specifically corporate loan processing, risk, and reporting experience is a plus.
- Experience with R, Python, Scala, SPSS, Teradata, SAS, Power BI, Tableau, Looker is a plus.
Required Skills and Experience
- Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics (with a Computer Science track) AND 5+ years of relevant work experience.
- Database Administration – security, file management, backup/restore processes, performance, etc.
- Strong experience writing, maintaining, optimizing, and troubleshooting SQL queries, stored procedures, and triggers.
- Strong experience with data engineering (Database Design, Data ETL, data management, etc.).
- Strong experience with Databricks.
- Exceptional debugging skills.
- Experience working on cloud-deployed solutions in AWS and/or Azure.
- Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and complexity.
- Comfortable working with and developing coding standards, applying clean code and SOLID principles.
- Strong analysis, documentation, and communication skills.
- IT Service Management best practices: follows good ticket management/update processes – keeps tickets updated regularly.
- Strong time-management skills: comfortable discussing and handling competing priorities.
- Ability to timebox troubleshooting, a conscientious sense of deadlines, and knowing when to proactively escalate.
- Excellent client management skills: sets clear expectations and provides updates with external and internal clients.
- Ability to understand discrepancies between bug-fixing, configuration changes, and enhancements.
- Fluency in English (verbal and written).
- Comfortable working in a distributed team across time zones.
Not Required but Desired Skills
- Experience with full-stack development and practices.
- Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and high-performance JavaScript.
- Knowledge of additional code stacks/frameworks: Python, NoSQL, .NET, Docker, AWS.
Salary: $7,920 to $9,240 per month ($95,040 - $110,880 per year) - USD
