Position overview:
Blue Orange is looking for an experienced Data Engineer to join our talented multi-disciplinary team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for all things data engineering, modern data infrastructure practices and patterns. The ideal candidate will be well versed in SQL and modern data technologies, understand how to drive the extraction of business requirements for data transformations, assess data quality, and have great communications skills. This candidate will work with our clients directly to help design, build, scale, and maintain production data validation systems and platforms.
Working Hours: Please note that this role requires adherence to U.K. working hours. Candidates must be available to work during standard business hours in the United Kingdom, regardless of their local time zone.
Note: This is an independent contractor role. We do not engage third-party agencies or recruiters. All communications and agreements will be made directly between Blue Orange Digital and the individual.
Responsibilities:
- Provide SQL expertise and data engineering support to our client in U.K. hours.
- Work with the team and stakeholders to define data source, accuracy and validation requirements
- Build, maintain, and data ingestions, data models, orchestrations, transformations and validation tests
- Work with source data systems to extract and prepare data for analytics and test
- Work with technical and business teams to evolve the data architecture
- Work within an Agile environment to constantly deliver value for our clients
Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in a data engineering role, with experience in ETL, data warehousing, data lakes, lakehouses, pipelines, modeling, and data quality validation
- Expert experience with data ingestion, modeling and conformance/compliance validation
- Expert-level skills with SQL, statistical analysis and data validation
- Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Interacts with others using sound judgment and a steady professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment
- BA or BS degree in a technical or quantitative field (e.g.: computer science, statistics)
- Excellent verbal and written English communication.
- Experience in the Financial services industry, specifically corporate loan processing, risk and reporting experience a plus
- R, Python, Scala, SPSS, Teradata, SAS, PowerBI, Tableau, Looker pluses
Required Skills and Experience:
- Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics (with a computer science track) AND 5+ years of relevant work experience.
- Database Administration – security, file management, backup/restore processes, performance, etc.
- Strong experience writing, maintaining, optimizing, and troubleshooting SQL queries, stored procedures, etc.
- Strong experience with data engineering (Database Design, Data ETL, data management, etc.).
- Strong experience with Databricks.
- Exceptional experience debugging issues.
- Experience working on cloud-deployed solutions in AWS and/or Azure.
- Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, complexity.
- Comfortable working with and developing coding standards, applies clean code and SOLID principles.
- Strong analysis, documentation, and communication skills.
- IT Service Management best practices: follows good ticket management/update process – keeps tickets updated regularly.
- Strong time-management skills: comfortable with discussing and handling competing priorities.
- Ability to timebox troubleshooting, a conscientious sense of deadlines, and knowing when to proactively escalate.
- Excellent client management skills: sets clear expectations and updates with external and internal clients.
- Ability to understand discrepancies between bug-fixing, configuration changes vs. enhancements.
- Fluency in English (verbal and written).
- Comfortable working in a distributed team across time zones.
Not Required, but Desired Skills:
- Experience with full-stack development and practices.
- Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and high-performance JavaScript.
- Knowledge of further code stacks/frameworks: Python, NoSQL, .NET, Docker, AWS.
Salary: $138,600 - $153,000 per year ($11,550 to $12,750 per month) - USD
