Your Impact

As a Senior Associate at RMI, you will use your creative problem-solving and stakeholder management skills to provide analysis and support to implement market-based mechanisms to accelerate shipping decarbonization.

You’ll be part of RMI’s Climate Aligned Industries Program (CAI), which is focused on decarbonizing heavy industries, implementing market-based mechanisms, and supporting policy implementation to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. Our mission is to shape green hydrogen (GH2) (and its derivatives) markets and flagship projects by providing thought leadership, convening GH2 champions, and collaborating with key corporate stakeholders within specific sectors and geographies. As part of this mission, we develop market-based mechanisms to accelerate the adoption of low and zero-emission fuels in heavy transport industries such as shipping. Such mechanisms will enable climate-ambitious corporations and cargo owners to timely and effectively influence their value chains and reduce their indirect emissions.

Major Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support the design and deployment of market-based mechanisms for shipping decarbonization.
  • Support the implementation of the go-to-market strategy of the registry for low-emission ocean transport services.
  • Analyze market trends in low-emission transport services and exchange-type platforms for certificates of emission reductions.
  • Analyze worldwide and regional regulations and policies and their implications for deploying market-based mechanisms for shipping decarbonization.
  • Analyze trends in reporting shipping-related emissions.
  • Support relations with stakeholders that may include policymakers and regulators; academic researchers; other NGOs; financial institutions; and companies through the transportation value chain.
  • Collaborate with other RMI initiatives and programs to drive joint analysis and outcomes related to decarbonizing heavy transport.
  • Synthesize recommendations into clear and compelling presentations.
  • Present quantitative and qualitative analysis in a clear and engaging format for public consumption.

Core Skills and Experiences

  • Commitment to working in close collaboration with partners in industry and civil society to achieve net-zero goals.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in shipping or logistic operations.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience focused on energy transition and decarbonization technologies for shipping.
  • Bachelor’s degree required (in an applicable field such as engineering, economics, business, finance, law, or physical and social sciences); advanced degree in a related field is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills, including the ability to break down complex issues in a straightforward, rational manner.
  • Comfortable working independently and with a diverse range of tasks, balancing concurrent requests and priorities.
  • Experience managing multi-stakeholder processes including members with diverse viewpoints
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and changing environments.

Desired Skills and Experiences

  • Experience in carbon markets; energy consulting and research; policy and regulation; marine fuel markets; or other related fields.
  • Exceptional writing skills for both technical and general audiences.
  • Background working on sectoral greenhouse gas emissions, especially emission reporting under regulatory requirements (e.g., EU MRV and IMO DCS) and voluntary initiatives (e.g., Clean Cargo, GLEC, Poseidon Principles, or Sea Cargo Charter).

We encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply, regardless of whether you feel you meet 100% of the qualifications. The top candidates will bring their own unique perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds from a variety of industries along with many but not necessarily all the skills listed above. We offer professional learning and training opportunities to help you develop the skills you may not have had the opportunity to cultivate yet.
