Introduction

You will be working in the Select Committee Team supporting the work of a House of Commons select committee. Select committees are cross-party committees of MPs who examine government policy and spending. You can find out what select committees are on this website. You will be part of a small team who work collaboratively to support a committee or committees.

The Role 

You will work for one, or possibly two, of the House of Commons’ select committees. You can find out what select committees are and what they do by following the link in the previous section. Select committees generally shadow a government department. If successful you’ll be able to express preferences about the committee(s) you would prefer to work with, although we cannot guarantee to meet those preferences.

You will work collaboratively as part of the committee team to support the committee, including conducting research and undertaking administrative and organisational tasks relating to committee inquiries or other work. This might include preparing policy information, assisting in writing reports, developing your knowledge of certain subjects covered by the committee, speaking to the committee about subjects you have researched and arranging for experts and other interested people to meet with the committee.

Some of the responsibilities may include:

  • Assist committees in deciding what subject to investigate
  • Research policy information and write, or help to write, reports to support the committee
  • Attend committee hearings
  • Accompany Members on visits in the UK (with other committee staff)

Skills and Experience 

Undergraduates can be studying any degree but must be on a recognised four-year sandwich/industrial placement course.

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  1. Effective interpersonal skills to work well with a diverse range of people from all backgrounds. 
  2. Good communication skills; both written and oral.
  3. Ability to bring together, understand and analyse evidence.
