Department Overview:

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

During the school year, MSCR offers Afterschool and Enrichment Programs at 15 MMSD Schools. Many of these sites have been awarded Community Learning Center (CLC) grants through the Federal Government. These programs offer curriculum to help support the students who need extra support in math and/or literacy.

Monday 2:30pm - 6:15pm; Tuesday - Thursday 4pm - 8pm; Friday 4pm - 7pm .

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (high school student exempt from this).
Experience working with children, families and youth, specifically Middle and High School age.
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with racially and culturally diverse youth, staff, parents, business owners, school staff and the community.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with youth and families from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
Excellent problem solving abilities and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to perform when confronted with emergency, unusual and/or crisis situations.
Experience working, volunteering or attending community programs.
Bilingual (Spanish/Hmong/ASL).

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Supervision of participants using the center, specifically the youth.
Plan, prepare & implement activities and special events utilizing participant input with interest and enthusiasm.
Foreshadow transitions and ensure they are completed in a safe and smooth manner.
Communicate with participants in an age-appropriate, relaxed and respectful manner.
Know the location of all participants at all times; be aware of the youth activity.
Know what is happening at the center.
Educate participants and encourage rules consistently Encourage the development of autonomy, self regulation, and respect for self and others.
Maintain professionalism and respect for participant when managing behavior, serve as a role model in both interactions and behavior.
Anticipate problems and redirect participant before problems occur Inform Youth Program Director and Assistant Director of your daily activity plans.
Seek approval and support form supervisors when planning special events or activities outside of the normal schedule and locations.
Communicate and function as a team with all staff at the center in a professional manner.
Greet all users at the center in a positive manner.
Communicate concerns to supervisors in a constructive and respectful manner.
Attend staff meetings, trainings/in-services as required.
Contribute positively to the center.

Work Location: Meadowood Neighborhood Center, 5740 Raymond Road.
