Description

This candidate will conduct scientific research and analysis to solve physical problems. They will analyze, design, code, and document complex computer applications used for scientific projects. They will perform design, development, and test of complex instruments for scientific measurements. They will contribute to scientific papers to be published in referred scientific publications and/or presented at scientific conferences. As they are to be familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field, they need to rely on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. They will be conducting a variety of tasks and work under general supervision and a certain degree of creativity is required. This position will report to a manager and may lead and direct others.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent, or substitute four years of equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of IT Experience
  • Graduate-level education/training (or equivalent experience) in coastal hydrodynamics numerical modeling.
  • 5 years of knowledge and experience with unstructured models ADCIRC and SCHISM is required.
  • 5 years of experience in geospatial data processing of large data sets from hydrodynamic models using Python packages (i.e. HSpy, NumPy, GOAL) is required
  • Development release expertise


Desired Skills & Qualifications


  •  Now COAST infrastructure experience
  • Experience working in Linux environment
  • Experience working in AWS environment
  • Knowledge of International Organization of Standardization (ISO) standards is a plus
  • Knowledge of International Hydrographic Organization 5-100 compliant framework
  • including product specifications is significant plus
  • Experience with other ocean models such as FVCOM and ROMS is a significant plus.
  • General knowledge of NOAA operational ocean modeling systems and operations is a plus
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management internally, as well as with customers and stakeholders externally
  • Communications skills both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated a high level of problem analysis and resolution skills.
  • Previous federal government project experience


Primary Responsibilities:


This position will lead the effort to post-process ocean model forecast guidance from NOAA/national oceans Service’s

(NOS) Surge and Tide Operational Forecast System and other NOS operational oceanographic forecast modeling systems

to provide IHO S-100 compliant files. Specifically.


1. Forecast guidance from NOAA/NOS in preparation of generating IHO S-104 Water Level Information for

Surface Navigation HDF5 files.

2. Forecast guidance from NOS SCHISM-based STOFS-3D for the western North Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans

and other future systems in preparation of generating IHO S-111 Water Currents for Surface navigation HDF5

files.

3. Forecast guidance from other present and future NOS and NWS oceanographic forecast modeling systems in

preparation of generating S-111 and S-104 HDFS files.

4. Assist in calculating the total uncertainties of water level and surface water currents forecast guidance from

each of the different oceanographic modeling systems, starting with STOFS-2D-Global and STOFS-3D.

5. Provide assistance to the development team in the encoding of post-processed output into S-100-compliant

HDFS files using the sl00py Python package.

6. Develop Unit and Integration Tests for the post-processing python package.

  • The salary for this position is $60,000 - $97,000 annually
