Job Summary
The Safety Manager is typically responsible for the safety of our employees at one or more client sites. In this role, you will implement HSE training, behavior-based safety programs, risk analysis, and HSE procedures in a hard and soft services environment. Other responsibilities may include safety supervision of construction and special projects including Compass employees and contractor staff. This position will also support critical operations, and extended work periods may be necessary though rare. The typical employee count is around 28-35 but higher with projects. You must be a team player and comfortable in a client services role to be successful in this position.

Develop and implement a comprehensive HSE management system to promote a continually improving safety culture across all project sites and an effective HSE program that promotes employee and management commitment, providing training, education, and reinforcement of policies and procedures to create a safe and healthy workplace.
Demonstrates visible presence in the field, training site personnel by preemptively intervening in situations that are potentially unsafe or where unsafe working conditions may occur.
Manage accident prevention to reduce risk of injury.
Focus on areas experiencing increased injury trend and provide solutions for improvement.
Administer safety/toolbox meeting conversation tools, safety moments/alerts, lessons learned, key HSE messages, and other pertinent HSE materials/information to organization, and facilitate OSHA/internal safety stand downs to deliver key HSE messages.
Share learnings from incidents (LFI’s) from investigations and interviews with work family members and key stakeholders.
Be a resource for subcontractors and Compass personnel regarding policies, procedures, training, regulations and other site/company expectations.
Manage programs to control and mitigate HSE hazards through robust task-risk assessment methodology to include pre-task planning, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Method of Procedures (MOP’s), Management of Change (MOC), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Permit-to-Work processes.
Analyze status reports to determine trends and develop action plan to reduce incidents and unsafe conditions.
Inspection/Site visit – Ensure that Compass Group facilities comply with OSHA and other state and federal standards through facility inspection. In addition, ensure that the unit is in compliance with safety and workers compensation procedures. Provide management with results/recommendations following inspection. Follow-up on progress.
Awareness / Incentives – Ensure that units have effective “on-going” safety awareness programs to promote a safe work environment. Provide incentive programs to increase awareness for management and employees.
Responsibilities
- Remote with travel is required, up to 60%
- Communication – Ensure that the unit, TPA and clinic communicate regularly on open claims. In addition, provide safety status to senior management on a monthly basis. This may include attending meetings and conference calls. Ongoing communication will assist in reducing accidents, late claims, and out of work days.
- Maintains OSHA recordkeeping; with assistance from corporate Risk Management, the position will determine reportable illnesses and injuries; position will prepare reports for campus sites on a regular basis; position will prepare annual reports.
- In conjunction with corporate risk management, the position will develop Compass’ rehabilitation policy and strategies that will enable injured employees to return more quickly to productive work.
- Monitor and report on workers’ compensation claim trends and develop strategies that address injury management.
- Ensure the activities associated with the successful return to work of injured workers are coordinated and implemented to minimize absence from work by conducting regular return to work meetings with injured employee and staff
- Environmental Risk is assessed, evaluated and managed according to Compass policy, local and federal regulations. Strict environmental regulatory policies are in place to protect people and assets. Compass corporate environmental director and team are available for consultation to effectively mitigate potentially hazardous conditions.
- Develop presentations and deliver safety meetings to Compass employees and/or 3rd Party Contractors as needed.
- Collaborate with client and project (PM) and construction manager (CM) teams to achieve delivery of safe project execution while maximizing quality and customer service and managing project costs.
- Site specific HSE Plans with deliverables on client KPI’s; FSI (Field Safety Instructions); and Business Continuity Plans (BCP), are site-specific, updated, tested and compliant with Compass Control Framework HSE requirements
- On call as the business dictates, working hours will vary and can be as early as 5:30 am to as late as 7pm (typically an 8 hour work day unless an incident or project arises) or later depending on the situation.
