Leidos is currently seeking a senior level Lead Safety Engineer to support the Antarctic Support Contract and the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program. This Position is located in Centennial, Colorado with at least annual deployments to CONUS and OCONUS (McMurdo, South Pole, and/or Palmer Station, Antarctica) sites and/or potentially the US Antarctic Program (USAP) Research Vessels. Provides direction to contract and full-time EH&S personnel at designated locations. Provides training support to all other EH&S positions.

Due to contract requirements, US Citizenship is required.

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date. This process could take up to 4 months.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

• Vision:  Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

• Mission:  To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines.  The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

• Supports Safety Manager with development and execution of strategic and tactical safety goals and initiatives. Guides the successful completion of major EH&S Program initiatives and may function in a project leadership role, providing guidance and recommendations to help program leadership achieve major programmatic objectives.

• Acts as the on- and off-site safety and health POC for McMurdo Station and Christchurch, NZ locations.

• In coordination with safety manager, is responsible for the hiring, tasking, direction and evaluation for MCM station safety and health contract personnel.

• Represents the EH&S as a prime technical contact on station projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

• Develops and implements environmental, safety and health standards, criteria and guidelines, such as those issued by OSHA, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and all other applicable regulations. Applies EH&S technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines

• Coordinate qualitative and quantitative monitoring of all workplace environments by analyzing work operations and processes, materials, equipment, and work habits of employees; measures the magnitude of exposure to workers of all environmental hazards by selecting or devising methods and instrumentation suitable for such measurements; and presents specific conclusions and recommendations to appropriate management groups.

• Must frequently interact, coach and consult with, first line supervisors and managers. Must be able to maintain a high level of professional calm and demeanor while providing independent and accurate recommendations and evaluations, in variety of situations with of varying degree of complexity and ambiguity.

• Responsible for engaging program participants in the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazardous workplace conditions and environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace that may cause sickness, impaired health or well-being, or significant discomfort and inefficiency among workers or citizens of the community.

• Audit programs and conditions at all facilities; provides detailed written reports of findings with recommendations for improvement (where needed); and follows up on implementation.

• Coordinates monitoring of workplace environments throughout the program by analyzing work operations and processes, materials, equipment, and work habits of employees.

• Takes effective steps to ensure that workplace conditions comply with applicable federal and state occupational safety and health standards, ensuring that all required records are prepared and maintained.

• Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment and tasking. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective.

What Sets You Apart:

• BS in chemistry, environmental, engineering, health and safety, or related field, equivalent relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.

• 8+ years experience with safety and health rules, regulations, standards, and the components of an effective safety program, including plant operations and/or construction safety, fire protection, public health, and development of related training programs is required.

• Field experience with logistic base support for remote work camps with emphasis on heavy industrial or construction environments.

• Be able to adapt to extreme weather conditions such as high winds, low temperatures.

• Excellent written and oral communications

• Individuals may achieve varying levels of professional certification in safety and/or industrial hygiene or equivalent through continuing education and experience.

You May Also Have:

• Relevant Antarctic or Arctic ESH experience is preferred.

• Professional Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.
