About the Department:
In collaboration with the George Mason University community, and as a part of the Office of the Provost, the Division for Enrollment Management optimizes student recruitment and retention by developing and implementing strategic enrollment plans, overseeing the admissions process, providing financial aid services, and managing the Mason Student Services Center—a centralized student services resource. The Division’s activities support the achievement of institutional enrollment goals by placing the student (and family) at the center of our work, supporting a culture of transparency, and leveraging data to inform decision-making.
The Office of Admissions facilitates the recruitment and enrollment of freshmen, transfer, graduate, and non-degree students in alignment with the University's strategic plan, ensuring a diverse and successful student body that contributes to the institution's excellence and global impact.
About the Position:
The Senior Regional Admissions Counselor spearheads the recruitment and enrollment of undergraduate students by developing and implementing effective student recruitment, marketing, and relationship management plans that meet the strategic enrollment goals of the university, researches and develops potential articulation agreements that could benefit future Mason's undergraduate freshman and transfer enrollment and utilizes the existing customer relationship management (CRM) technology to maximize all aspects of the undergraduate funnel. Works with internal and external campus stakeholders to promote and increase the Mason brand in Texas. Reviews applicant files and make appropriate admission decisions.
This position requires frequent evening and weekend work and extensive travel. Position is expected to safely and independently lift 20 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Responsibilities:
- Actively recruits new undergraduate students by conducting recruitment activities in assigned region;
- Contacts and travels to schools in-person and virtually;
- Meets with prospective students and their families;
- Connects with alumni in the region to promote engagement with the university/Mason Alumni Volunteer Network (MAVN);
- Conducts presentations that highlight George Mason University;
- Represents George Mason University to prospective students and their families throughout assigned region;
- Attends college fairs/nights and makes individual visits to high schools in surrounding area and states within region during the fall and spring of each year;
- Organizes and supervises local area receptions for prospective students and yield events for accepted students in coordination with large scale events offered each year;
- Arranges and conducts individual one-one-one appointments with students as well as organizes regional group information sessions for students, parents, and school counselors;
- Provides effective customer service in communicating with prospective students to encourage campus visits as well as apply for admission;
- Maintains appropriate follow-up communication with these students regarding the status of their applications for admission and financial aid;
- Works closely with leadership to ensure that Mason is making every effort to attract and enroll a diverse student population from the area;
- Stays up to date on all relevant information/policies about the institution;
- Actively engages alumni to assist in recruitment and yield activities where appropriate;
- Reviews all types of applicant files and make appropriate admissions decisions following established policies and procedures;
- Handles a caseload of approximately 2,000 - 3,000 applicant files;
- Enters decisions in student database;
- Serves as an active member of the committee for the whole applicant pool;
- Builds relationships with local school counselors, community-based organizations, and area schools;
- Increases alumni activity in assigned region;
- Joins, and participates in, regional admission and school counselor associations to build solid working relationships;
- Works with the Alumni Office and MAVN coordinator to cultivate a local alumni group to assist and support the college's recruitment efforts in the region; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Demonstrated experience providing customer service;
- Effective organizational skills;
- Proficient in the use of related technology with willingness and ability to learn new systems;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
- Demonstrated ability to perform work with substantial attention to detail;
- Ability to independently manage and complete work assignments without close supervision;
- Ability to adapt to change and take on new challenges;
- Ability to set up a home office within the state of Texas, specifically in Dallas or Houston;
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse populations; and
- Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in higher education, regional admissions, high school counseling, public relations, or sales;
- Experience with Salesforce Customer Relationship Management;
- Experience with Ellucian Banner;
- Bilingual;
- Knowledge of high schools and community colleges in the greater metropolitan areas of Texas;
- Familiar with Mason's physical campus and surrounding area; and
- Familiar with Mason's diverse population, admissions processes, campus offerings for students, and campus events.
