The Role

We are looking for an R&D Tax Associate to support our in-house R&D Credit Study offering. We pride ourselves on offering clients an exceptional experience in applying for and obtaining R&D Tax credits. The R&D Tax Associate will assist with preparing work papers, documenting technical interviews, and preparing calculations of R&D Credits and R&D Study Reports under the guidance of senior team members. This role is an exciting opportunity to gain exposure to startups in innovative industries while developing your expertise in the growing field of R&D Tax Credits.

  • Support the team in preparing and delivering R&D Tax Credit Studies for our clients

  • Manage multiple projects and update the team project tracker regularly and efficiently

  • Prepare work papers and documentation that support R&D Tax credit and Sec 174 calculations

  • Learn and master our suite of software tools needed to complete R&D Studies

  • Grow your understanding of relevant technical industries (particularly Software and Biotech) to help prepare technical reports about client R&D projects

  • Collaborate with team members to enhance internal processes and contribute to the success of the department. 

Your Typical, Atypical, Day

  • Organizing client files and contacting clients via email.

  • Working on R&D calculations, reports, and tax forms in Excel and other tax software.

  • Learning and keeping up to date with many types of software.

  • Reviewing financial statements to identify R&D opportunities for clients.

  • Analytical and able to talk with clients and Burkland colleagues to facilitate understanding of the R&D credit.

  • Self-motivated to grow your knowledge in the field through continuing education, reading, research, and asking questions.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • 1–3 years of professional experience in Public Accounting, Tax, or related field.

  • Basic knowledge of R&D tax credits, or a strong desire to learn.

  • Strong Excel skills and ability to handle data analysis and calculations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including fast response times on our 100% remote team.

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to various software tools and department processes.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Interested in learning more about software, biotechnology, and other technical industries.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability and desire to grow in your role, including interest in eventually becoming client-facing and taking progressively more responsibility over your projects as time goes on.

Preferred:

  • Progress toward CPA certification

  • R&D Credit, Corporate tax, and/or Sec 174 experience

  • Knowledge of, or history working in the software industry

The base pay range target for the role described in this job description is $70,000 - $85,000. Final offer amounts depend on multiple factors such as candidate experience and expertise, geographic location, total compensation, and market data. In addition full-time regular positions are eligible for, 401(k), health benefits, and other benefits; some of these benefits may be available for part-time.
